I've just noticed a couple of vacuum lines disconnected and the jeep stalls about 30 seconds after I've started the engine. This seems like a stupid question, but in every picture I've seen of the 258 I6, the carburetor is director beneath the air cleaner. Mine seems to be off to the side. Is this normal?

Yeah, the air cleaner is kinda goofy on these things....can the whole works and get a weber card and you will be a much happier camper!
