When I did my swap I had a 2.5 auto. The auto is 23 spline. Only the manual 2.5 is 21 spline. If you are overly concerned grab a 6pinion planetary out of a 231c. That will double the torque rating as jeep 231 only have 3. I did that as well as wide chain and super short sye while in there.

i am running a HD 321 from a dodge dakota, it has the wide chain in it already. the front output is slightly lower on the dodge cases however. i am also running an ax-15 with said x-case with a sye behind my 5.2. i have yet to get it out for any serious wheeling but i have no issues so far. also with stock gears and 31"s with the 4.0 i was getting 14-16mpg. with the same running gears and the 5.2 i am getting consistent 15.5-17.5mpg.

Nice thread mylilyj, though it needs considerable mechanic skills to dis/assemble the 231..U see actually I can only get my hands on "basic" parts here in Greece, so I don't think a 231c will be common, whereas a spline adaptor I thing will be easier to find from the US. That been said the thread is really superb cause I read number of times about different versions of the 231 but without such details.

not to start a fight or anything but, if you think it requires "considerable mechanical skills" to disassemble an np231 then a v-8 swap may not be within your realm of expertise. the np231 is one of the simplest x-case designs you can find. maybe i am misunderstanding your point due to some slight language misinterpretation (though your English is better than most Americans).

i hope you all the best of luck in your swap, i used moparfreak's build as a reference while i did my swap as well. there's some really good info in here.

The tcase may seem intimidating. But it is actually fairly simple and straight forward . I am not sure what you mean by spline adapter. But you need to totallyy disassemble the tcase to change the splines out. Have a large clean table to work on. So you can lay things out as you take apart. Assemble in reverse order. The 6pinion planetary and wide chain as well as 23 spline input can all be found used on eBay for under $200. Now what i thought would be a month turned into 4. For me. I had my UPS and downs during this swap. But nothing beats a v8 wrangler :-). I am currently upgrading to a HP44 in front and going to 4.56. I can't wait to get her back on road again.

Indeed Mike, personally I wouldn't say I am qualified for the V8 swap (..not even the 4.0L) but a friend of mine has the skills (he used to work in the states back in the 80's so he knows even better the 318 or 360 than the 2,5L) and my research is done to get his job easier.. That been said, I thought the conversion of a 231 from 21splines to 23 uses a kind of adaptor placed without disassembling the Tcase..I think I should have read Novak's pages a bit too fast!
Thx for the info Mike and mylilyj!

it's so sad that your not in the states, i will have a dodge HD231 with a sye to sell hopefully in the coming months. i am converting to a flipped dana 300 after summer if the dana 60 swap goes smoothly.

come to think of it... i have a complete set of gears and a mainshaft for a stock 4.0 wrangler around the garage somewhere. actually i have an entire case missing only the rear case half, i had a run in with a shattered pinion universal joint. when the u-joint went it took the whole back half of the case with it, not fun at 60mph.

anyhow if you can do your homework or give details on how to ship overseas we may be able to get you the parts you need to convert your 2.5 case to a 4.0 case. it may not be cheap but that's up to you to figure out.

sorry we have hijacked your thread mopar....

Prekman. you should start your own thread and we can all help you more there rather than cluttering up this thread with unrelated banter.

Thx, Mike. I'll do my homework and when ready I may even ask for your help. It's always valuable to be advised by people who know. As for the parts, I know that shipping is an issue, I've already purchased a PSC gearbox (which is great but a little too smooth for my 235/75/15) and a couple of rear axles for my Dana 35c (when I was thinking to let the jeep oem)...and more or less, I paid half the price of each for shipping. But u see the thing is that we do not have here junk yards where we can do our shopping and for some parts the US is the only provider.
That been said, sorry for the thread hijacking,
keep wheeling,

Just read all eight pages!!! Looks good man!! Had a question. Do you have a parts list on what you used? I'm in the process of researching for a 5.9 swap!! Any help would be good!

No sweat on the conversation detour, pretty much all the important stuff is in the first few pages anyway.
The input shaft, which is what needs to be changed to put the 4 cylinder t-case behind the AX-15, is quite small, so if it had to be shipped it should be fairly inexpensive.
Once again I am using basically stock 4 cylinder t-case parts behind my V8 and haven't had one problem from it yet.

Something I just remembered that I should bring up. Motor and trans mounts. Since my swap I have literally ripped all of mine apart, on different occasions mind you. I found some motor mounts that have built in hooks to limit travel and ended up going with a poly trans mount as the rubber ones just couldn't hold the power.

Cooling system is still working great. Other than a worn out engine (which I knew about from the start), a bent wheel (no clue how it happened), the mounts and my axle hop (which seems to be cured by the ladder bar) I haven't had any problems with the swap. Still enjoying the power and noise and not regretting it one bit.

Would you go with a different tranny if you had to do it again? Why did you prefer older motor today obd2? I do appreciate all the input!!!

I used graand Cherokee motor with dodge truck mounts on block side . Then Fabbed frame side mounts out of 1/4 plate and boxed them with no issues. I too have wheel hop/axle wrap even though i am spring under.

i have a set of new leaves spring under on my yj that have been wrapped to the point of bending. the v-8 just needs HD springs under there. i'm thinking of an add a leaf and wrap bar before i put another new set on there. this would be after my currently half completed d60 swap however.

mopar have you had alot of problems with torqued springs with the magnum in there? i know yours isn't a true magnum but still...

How is mine not a true magnum. I am sure my mopar perf pcm is getting at least 250hp out of it.

Anywho I run rubicon express xd 4inch lift springs. No bent springs yet. But i try and keep the wrap under control by not hammering from a stand still. Kick down gear with the auto impresses everyone that's been in the passenger seat though.
