Utk or otk?

At the end of this Month I am am going to be switching to 1 ton steering and I don't know weather to stay with the stock under the knuckle or over the knuckle set up! I don't plan on going soa at this moment, I guess I really just want to know if it would benefit me going to otk if I plan on staying sua......thanks

For one thing it will keep your tie rod out of the rocks and allow you to obtain better geometry between the drag link and tie rod. You may need to get a stock pitman arm depending on your setup. That's the main reason I did mine plus I got a good deal on a Teraflex knuckle.

You can go otk only of you have enough lift to warrant it. You don't want to bind your steering if your tire is flexes up two inches.

I had to get creative to get around this but yes you will need enough lift to benefit from.

I am running 4 inchs of lift and a stock zj pitman arm, do I sound like a otk canadate?

You'll need a stock Yj arm or maybe even one that's flatter than that at 4".

I was a little nip and tuck at 5" whih is why I gave my goferit kit away to Mr.B.

I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying you're kind of on the border of it not working.

I went the otk route and am very happy. It didn't come without its problems though. I'm running about 3" of lift and I had to go with a pratically flat pitman arm, that I got of a 2 wheel drive Ford ranger. I know Lou got a bling NASCAR arm for his. I love how high and out of the way my tie rod is now.

So I don't mind if I have to find or order a stock Yj or flat arm, but could a guy flip the tirod at the pitman arm to gain more clearance? I plan on the ruff stuff kit which has 1 ton joint any ways for I have to cut and ream the knuckles and pitman arm any ways........ Here are a couple pics of my current stock set up (don't mind the slightly bent tierod) let me know if you guys think the otk will work, I would hate to order it and no have room for it!

Its gotta be a flat pitman arm for it to work. I think I read that the astro van has a flat arm that works well with tie rod flips. Can anyone confirm?


I have a stock Yj arm I would be glad to send you to try out though.

It looks to me like youd have plenty of room to run OTK but you could flex it out and see how close everything is now to get a better idea. I ran OTK when I had a dana 30 with a stock yj pitman arm but with heims similar to the RS kits. You could mount the TRE to the top of the pitman if you really need to.

Have you considered running heim joints? It'd be easier and stronger.

Ripper ran an astro vanbox for a while, not sure if he still is

1992 YJ 1"Body Lift, Slip Yoke Eliminator & CV Driveshaft,
2.5" TJ exhaust, WJ valve cover, XJ Computer, External Slave Cyl AX15,
Durango Steeringbox, No track or sway bars, CJ tailgate, on 31's :)

I would but I drive the jeep on the street in the summer and heims aren't street legal for what ever reason, normally that would but me but I am running DIY deadlocks and no doors most the time and so I don't want to add any more things for the state patrol to tag me with haha!

I Think Canman was just refering to the astro pitman arm. Which is very long and flat and it would make his current y link steering bind. I run OTK and have 3" of suspension lift and run Ford ranger pitman arm which is close to flat the only problem with it is its slightly shorter than a YJ arm so it affects my turing a radius ever so slightly.
