utility trailers

I'm looking to rent a trailer and U-haul won't rent one to me unless I have a hard top... ya, I sold that last year.

I guess they are thinking that crap might fly out and hit me in the head? When I stop?

Anyone run into this issue before?

Anyone got any pointers on where to rent one that won't hassle me about this?

tks!

dude you are a mod now? I'd hire anyone with "jeepforum mod" on their resume. nuff said.

My neighbor's truck is a F-350 dually. LMAO. I could see me pulling a 14' trailer with my yj.

You wouldn't sweat the safety issue there?

tks

U-haul wouldn't rent me a tow dolly to move a Nissan 3 miles to my house becasue I didn't have a hard top. I asked them what the difference was. They said it was part of thier corporate policy. Aparently it had nothing to do with vehicle weight.

I asked them if thier corporate policy though of the shredded fiberglass going through my head instead of just the bumper of the car in tow hitting my roll bar. I included a comment about not being very confident in thier own equipment.

Dude didn't think it was very funny.

I see you are in Manassas (I used to live in Centreville). If you are a member of a local club (OCC, NOVAJeepers, etc.) I know several of their members have trailers you could probably borrow. Otherwise the only option you have with U-haul is to either pick up the trailer with a different vehicle or borrow a hardtop.
It is also against their "corporate policy" to rent a trailer to anyone driving a Ford Explorer.

yep, may do that.

I hate borrowing though. You run the risk of upsetting people if something goes bad.
I found a place that has a 5X8. Girl at the counter said I didn't need a wiring harness.

Anyone think that a 5X8 is too much???

depends on what you plan to haul. I tow a 620# m416 trailer with my YJ and load it up to about 1000#'s on a regular basis.

I would think you should be fine, just use common sense and make sure you balance the load.

I have a little 5x8 utility trailer that I haul stuff around on. No problems. Do you have the swaybar on yet? If not go REAL easy with a trailer. A swaybar is almost a must pulling any kind of weight.

Here's my trailer setup...I use it to carry my dive gear and tanks to and from the coast...

I haven't pulled it since I lifted the Jeep, but I never had a problem before...BTW, someone once told me that U-Haul won't install a hitch on a Wrangler either.

P.S. That trailer was 350 bucks at Tractor Supply...it's a 4x6...

I pulled a 5x8 trailer loaded down with 50 2x6x8 boards for about 20 miles with no problems. Of course I didn't act crazy either, I ran about 40-50 mph.
