Urgent: Question about NP231 Please Help!

Okay guys, I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I am making a very long trip tomorrow and need to know for sure. I was changing all the fluids out and got down to the transfer case. read that it takes about 2.5 quarts of ATF fluid. Well I drained it, and I can only manage to get about 1.5 in it. Whats the deal??? I dont want to be 300 or so miles from home tomorrow and be having issues with this.. Oh and its a 89 with a 4.2L, BA 10/5 tranny, and of course, NP231 transfer case. Please Help. I'm already behind on everything and havent even packed yet.

I am assuming you are using the top fill and not trying to fill it back up through the lower drain plug?

None taken- and I know its really weird that it will only take that much. I'm worried I'll be halfway there and burn something up...

Put the plug back in and drive it. Come back and check it. If you can still get oil on your finger when you check it, you will be fine. I can't remember how much it takes, but if it is full, it is full.

Hmmm... well according to MeanMax (took the pic from a write-up he did), and as the adage goes, we should always listen to MeanMax, it takes 2.2 q...

Fill it till it begins to run out of the fill plug hole and you're good to go.
