Upgraded Brake Master Cylinder for my huge calipers on the HEEP. Dual Pistons & GM's

yesterday i spent 20 minutes swapping out Master Cylinders in an effort to get better braking....

i used a 1978 grand marquis MC and adjusted the brake rod thingy IN about 6 turns.

After bleeding my brakes this is what i've got...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8GMNGyvyEw

ignore the wiring mess.

i'm still not done with my 4.0 / aw4 swap so i haven't clened the wiring up yet.

the pedal is very hard.... feels almost like having manual brakes to be honest.... guess it's b/c the marquis came with hydroboost if i remember right..... maybe i'll throw on a vacuum pump......

ah... stock proportioning valve is being used... it is NOT modified.... and i still get slightly more bias to the rear on pavement as you can see..... an adjustable prop. valve will be added to the rear brake hydraulics and mounted to the dash somewhere...

oh, the holes in this MC were different sizes, just like the oem brake MC, but they were reversed so i just bent the brake lines, as shown , to hook it all up.

maybe i should have just put new fittings on each line instead of reversing them... not sure.... trial and error baby.... love it!

If you want to experiment, get a Lincoln MC (84-90 Lincoln Mark 7 / 1 1/8" bore ) . They were not H-boosted and fit the bill.

Love the video

they weren't for 4 wheel discs though.

i actually had one of those in my hand when i got this one and decided to stick with what i got because of the larger rear fluid resevoir. a proportioning valve is next on my list....

erik,
still running the stock prop valve, and have more brakes on the rear = you screwed up when you "just bent the lines" mate...
you should have got adapter fittings, and kept the brakes as they should have been....
i tried the grand marquis, e350 a corvette m/c's, and god knows what else, before i bit the bullet and went ahead and got the dual diaphram booster. thats the only thing that gave me, IMO, excellent brakes.
swap the lines back around to where they are supposed to be, and then see how the brakes are...

martin,

do you have a link to that booster? I was looking at a E-350 booster but might as well do it right the first time. Thanks

just get the m/c and booster for a 1995 6 cylinder yj.
will be a dual diaphram booster and a plastic m/c...

if ye cant find them, shoot me a pm and i'll dig them out for you. or search,. i have posted up about them @5 times already...

erik, the m/c is supposed to be the same way it was, if that makes sence? basically you made the rear reseviour feed the front brakes, and vice versa...
when i was figuring out my brakes, a good flaring tool was worth its weight in gold...

Martin, with a 2000 Ford 8.8 with disk brakes on the rear & the standard D30 on the front, would you recommend the OEM proportioning valve or something else to go with the '95 MC & booster?

P.S. sorry for the hi-jack Big-n-Broke.

no worries on the hi-jack, we're all here to help eachother

tomorrow night i'm going to put the lines back the other way... i was thinking about doing it tonight but i ran out of steam after redoing my gauges (ditched the crappy autometers and went with an almost-as-crappy set of steward warner's)

-Erik <--- will be flaring away tomorrow right before i stretch the front 5"!

sorry, another hi-jack. is the 95 brake booster different from a 94? I'm getting ready to do the 8.8 with disks and 33" tires. My next upgrade was going to be brakes and I was wondering if there is another way to get better brakes without having to buy a after market kit.

1 last time for the kids in the back........

1995 4.0 yj.
1995 means 1995, not 94,93 etc etc etc.....the last year they made yj's (1995) they finally figured the brakes needed a boost, so to say...
so they got the dual diaphram booster and different m/c...

class over.
