Hard to tell, looks like someone rigged up a tailgate stop.

Talking about the U shaped bar? It's the tailgate stop. Once the lug goes past the two indents that looped area at the end holds the gate in place. I pulled that all off of mine.

not rigged...that's from the factory, there's supposed to be a black plastic cover over it that was held on by the six screw going into the tailgate

Hmm. Learn something new everyday. What years was that design used?

What years was this factory? I've not seen it on any of the YJ's I've been around.

Before they put that tire stop on the back passenger side corner. Mine didn't have one of those or even holes for it.

Maybe '87 to '90 seems like '91 is the start of changes, going to the 4.0 then in '92 with the family cage etc....

humm, my 87 has both.

Do everything with a positive attitude, it won't always work but you'll piss enough people off to make it worthwhile.

the voices aren't real but they sure have good ideas.

My 91 didn't have the interior one, just the exterior.

Like I said, learn something new everyday.

both my '88 and my '89 had the interior tailgate stop and the exterior stop....I think the interior one was meant more to keep the tailgate from accidentally closing on you on a incline then to stop the tailgate from opening too far

That would be a helpful feature...wonder why they dropped it...

Have it on my "92" also, no outside stop. My black plastic cover broke so I took it all off.

This. Mine still allows it to open and hit the exterior stop.

Adopt your pets. Don't shop for them.
