Undercarriage cleaning/painting

I need some advice on cleaning and painting the underside of my 92 YJ. It has seen a lot of winters/salt and now is in Arizona for good. I need to clean off the surface rust and shoot it with some paint. Any help/advice would be great!

I would say go to the professionals and have them do the best they can with it.

As a Canadian (who has seen many winters), I would start by stripping down the underside of everything that can be removed easily (springs, axles, driveshafts) and have it all cleaned up and painted with good rust protectant. The springs may need replacement .. check it and look into a lift kit.

The frame and body underside should be sand blasted (or bead blasting if its available), rust protected and painted.

To do the best possible, a complete frame-off is the way to go.. but that can get expensive. If you do go frame-off, powdercoat the frame, bead-blast the entire body and go nuts with rust protection and painting.

Hope this guides you in the right direction. If you need more information, look to the magazine racks for "customizing" tricks for ancient metal and hotrods .. there are great ideas there.
