Turns out that surface rust was more than surface rust...

Well today on my YJ I wanted to do something with the surface rust I had on my stock rear bumper. I tap the rust just to make sure on it's on the surface...turns out it was a little more than that.

There was mud in the frame rail rusting the bumper from the inside-out. How the hell does this happen? I'm wondering how the frame isn't rotting yet.

I was thinking of making a patch for it, but getting a new bumper seems like a better idea. Easier and less ugly.

Saw this on Quadratec, seems like a good deal. Anybody have any experience with this bumper or know where I can get one at a similar price?

You'd better flush those frame rails out with fresh water ASAP. Mud gets in the holes in the side and ends up at the lowest point in the back. My frame rails are rotted right where the rear spring hanger is. I need to cut it out and weld a new section in. It's apparently a common problem. They should have made them with drain holes in the bottom.

I haven't even gone off road with this thing yet. Only had it for a few months. Makes me wonder how long this crap has been in there.

Every time the Jeep is driven in the rain water that has dirt in it finds it way into the frame through the countless holes. That crap has been in there for years. Time to hit the entire area with a wire wheel and get rid of all the rusted metal. I did this on my Jeep and the holes grew to at least twice the size.

BTW that is your rear cross member not the bumper.

This just keeps getting better...

If I drill 2 half inch drain holes in each frame rail and try cleaning them out with water, would that work well?

It will drain the water out better, but it will give you more spots for rust to start quicker. Thats just my opinion though.

Get a new cross member and fill in all the holes, weld them up or whatever you feel like. Rust happens, theres nothing you can really "DO" about it.

I say leave it for Halloween. Great Jack-o-Lantern there.

Grind out the rust and weld some new metal in there. May want to look at the whole frame and see what other areas are bad and tackle them all at once. Then get a new bumper to put on.
