I just had my transfer case open to change the input shaft. A good pair of lockring pliers made the job SO MUCH EASIER than when I took it apart the first time. Worth every penny indeed. I got a pair of Cman at Sears for around $20 or so.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I'm looking at purchasing one of these plates from Summit for flat towing my YJ, but I don't feel comfortable enough (or competent, heh) installing it myself.

Who could I take this to in the Southern California area to get done for a good price? I've never dropped the transfer case before but I've removed driveshafts no problem. Also, would the fact that I have an SYE matter at all?

If you can replace a water pump you can pull apart a tcase.

I am going to pull my t-case and tranny out after the holidays and I was wondering if I could yank the selector shift plate from a '97-'99 XJ and it be the "true neutral" plate I need?

On Summit it states the part is for a '97-99 TJ & XJ.

Since I have a Pull-a-part up the road and more time than money, I was thinking about getting one from there.

I am not sure if they are the same. Are the t=cases the same in the XJ and TJ in those years?
You might want to go tot he XJ section and ask around.

You can see here the differences in the two plates....

You are welcome. Mine is a home made plate and it still works perfectly too.
Glad you had success with it.

I assume they are the same plate since the website list them for those years and models but that's all I know. I may just modify my plate as you did. Is there a template available?

Thanks again!

I had a template someplace but I don't remember where i stored it.
I emailed it to somebody way back when. I can check my old emails.
Thing is, you need to be precise with putting the dip in and get the curves exact so it slides smoothly, and the dip has to be exact so it puts the fork in the right location to disengage the shaft between the gears.
I have made seven of them and they all turned out perfect.
If the vehicle is not your daily driver, just pull the t-case and the old plate out. If it looks like the one in the pic above exactly, which it probably does, then just order it then.
Pulling the t-case is pretty easy. Some 13mm nuts hold it to the trans, some lincage and cables.
Splitting the case is where you have to be careful, so as not to crack the case. Once it's split, the plate replacement is very simple. Re-assembly requres a tube of black RTV glue and someone to help you lift it back in.
Honestly, I've pulled my t-case four times, twice by myself. It's not that heavy, just awkward. Weighs maybe sixty to seventy pounds?

The entire job is four beers long if it's cool outside. Nine if it's hot. .

This spring I am installing the Tera-low to my case, I want to do this mod at the same time. I flat tow often.

The case is not bad to remove, if you can bench press 65LBS you can do it

Thanks guys. I've taken out that t-case a few times and put in a couple SYE's. I may just get the plate from Summit and roll with that.

Add the Tera '2lo' kit, which has this fix already, and also has the 2lo part added. I did and don't regret the somewhat high price tag for the kit at all.

I'm thinking about the Tera 2-low for my case and giving my TJ plate to a buddy of mine. He's been after one for years even after he got his trailer to tow the jeep.
