Transmission Whine?

The jeep started to make a whining/screeching sound today. It's coming from the transmission because it only happens while it's in gear. The sound isn't constant, it comes and goes intermittently. Typically occurs in 1,2,3 gears. It's a stock AX-5 transmission. Any ideas?

Does the sound go away if you're moving with the clutch in, or does it change depending on how much throttle you're giving it? The throwout bearing is the part that helps the clutch separate from the flywheel, and the whine you describe indicates that the bearing could be going bad.

Also, does the sound change depending on which part of a given gear you're in? (ie high RPM vs low RPM) I'm not very knowledgeable on transmissions and clutches but this information will definitely help others to diagnose your problem.

the sound goes away with the clutch in. as far as how much throttle, it doesn't seem to matter. I'm not sure about low vs. high RPMs. i'll check later today and see. I do know that it didn't seem to make the sound when i let off the gas completely (engine braking).

I would start with a fluid change. Use 10W-30 motor oil. Yes, it IS the correct fluid. I would suspect that you have synchronizers on their way out.

There is no situation that cannot be improved with a small but well-placed explosive.
