Transmission whine

My transmission is whining in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Gear. Not 4th.

It's a really high pitch whine that is rather annoying. I put it in 4th most of the time to avoid listening to the whine.

Any ideas on what it could be???

I just replaced the Clutch, Pilot Bearing, Release bearing and Transmission mount. It was making this noise before though.

Doesn't seem to affect driving

Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes....a bearing. Depending on the transmission you have, look at the drawing in the manual and you can see which gears are on which shaft. From this, you can narrow down where the problem might be.

I cant quite remember what its called but 1-3 & 5 gear share this internal piece and 4th has its own. Thats why you dont hear it in 4th. I have the same problem w/ my 88'. I want to call it a shaft bearing or something. Do a search there is allot of info. on the board about it.

if you have the ax-15, the main shaft has 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear on it and then the intermediate shaft has 5th on it. the output shaft has 4th on it, 4th is basically a 1 to 1 ratio. so even in 4th gear your still using the main shaft. Not really sure why you wouldnt hear a whine in 4th though.... kinda interesting... the only thing i can think of is that each gear has there own idler bearing. When your in 4th all the others will be spinning freely, so unless the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th idler bearings all happend to go at once, i can't think of any reason it would be whining.....

Do you hear it in fifth? There is a chance the pitch would be much lower and harder to hear.

Yes I do hear it in 5th. It's not as bad but it's definitely there.

How hard is it to fix these bearings. Well besides the fun part of dropping the Transmission.......again.

I hate opening AX transmissions. Just get a big, clean area, so when the balls and springs fall out you can find them again. Nothing is impossible with a good manual and patience...and tools.

Input shaft bearing. Since 4th is 1 to 1, and is on the main shaft...there is little to no lateral pressure applied to the bearing. Whereas the other gears...being offset the main shaft, apply pressure to the main shaft.....and bearing. Been there, done that.

You see my Jeep is still at stock height. meaning I need to Jack it up to get at the Transmission. I don't have all the lift yet like you Tomb Raider

Should I be worried about these??? or can I just leave it for a while.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined but have never tackled anything like a tranny until i did my ax-15. With a good manual and the right tools nothing is hard as long as you take your time. If i would have had all the parts, i could have broken down the tranny and rebuild it in a weekend easy, but i had to wait on parts. From start to finish it took about 2 weeks. There are a few gears pressed on the main shaft thay you'll need a press to get on and off.. Luckily a friend of mine has a 20 ton shop press. If you have to go to a shop to have them pressed off and on wait until you have all your parts so they can do it in one shot. and always take pictures...

the guts:

and a million pieces:

Something I noticed that was not mentioned. You have an 89. If you still have the POS split case Peugoet trani, it's going to whine no matter what you do to it...nature of the beast...unless you replace it. Mine whines exactly the same way and it is an 89 trani. It was in there when I bought it and am getting monies to change it out.

It is the counter shaft that is whining. In 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th the power is transferred through the counter shaft, 4th is straight through the main shaft. If you don't have the Peugoet, you have bad bearings in the counter shaft and you have to break it down to get to them. Yes, you will need a press to do the job right. If you don't have access to one, take it to someone who does.

Here's a simple how to on removing the whine from your Jeep:

1 - Remove the POS pougeout transmission from your Jeep
2 - Replace it with the NV3550.

Simple eh?

Sorry, i just hate the d@mn thing.
