Transmission issues
I haven't pulled it yet, and based on conversations that I've read, I may be needing a new shift fork - but just in case...
'95 6cyl standard my transmission doesn't like second gear. normally it's fine, but this morning when cold I couldn't get it to engage. I just replaced the master/slave cylinders and don't have any issues in other gears. It's hard to get in when cold - once warm it seems fine - also doesn't like to downshift. On the other end - my drivetrain seems to have excess play. when it's in the air and in gear I can turn the wheels about 1/2 rotation of the driveshaft, and occasionally when i let off the gas it "clunks". Related or not? Any suggestions will help. I'm going to pull it apart in the next couple of weeks and wondering what I should expect. Thanks

sounds like it could be a throwout bearing. mine does it and i think thats what it is, does it make a high pitch squeel when the clutch is not pushed in?

couple things to try: 1) try changing out the tranny fluid, maybe to some synthetic like Redline. syncros can be tricky with this though since they work on friction. if they're really bad switching to a synthetic can sometimes make things worse. 2) try double clutching when downshifting, particularly when cold. if things shift easier it's a pretty good bet that it's your syncros. double clutching comes from the times when trannys didn't have syncros. 3) to help speed up warm up times, put your t-case in neutral and your tranny in gear and let the engine idle for a minute or two. i do this in the winter all the time. it gets the fluid in the tranny moving around before you actually start moving and start shifting gears and generally makes for smoother shifting. Unfortunately that sounds very familiar. When I have to I double clutch and it goes in. I just changed my tranny fluid, so unfortunately that's not going to help - as it gets colder here in NE I can tell it's getting harder to force into second. I'm hoping to fix it before the snow flies as I don't have a garage and pulling the tranny out in the snow doesn't sound like fun!
