transmission

when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd it wont go into second gear
just seems to grind and make weird noises

but when shifting from 1st to 2nd it goes in perfectly fine

what could be causing this

its a 1990 4.2 i believe its a ax 15 tranny

anything helps

How many miles do you have on it? Could be the synchromesh on second gear. Second and fourth are the first to go on the AX15.

They swapped tranmissions half way through the 1989 production year, so you definitely have the AX15 if it's still the stock transmission.

My 92 does that. Doesn't grind when down shifting, but won't go into gear until I get below a certain speed. Doesn't like to go into first until I'm at a complete stop and when it's cold it grinds in 2nd.

SOLD - Maybe I can afford this game when I'm old and rich.

mine does the same thing.. ax-15
i just match the rpms when shifting into second.... example... driving in 3rd, slowing down take out of 3rd gear, let clutch back out, rev pedal to about 2200 rpms or wherever yours works best, then push in clutch and should slip right into 2nd with ease while your still at the rpms....

i havent tried switching the tranny fluid yet, let me know if it helps!

I just put fresh 80-90 in mine and it's still the same. The fluid that came out was milky like it got water in it somehow, but aside from 1st, when it's cold and downshifting everything else works great.

(I know, that's like saying virgins are great in bed except they don't know anything and bleed all over the place...)

yeah, like ohhpe said, try to double de-clutch when you are downshifting from 3rd to second. although you are supposed to have a syncromesh tranny, the 2-3 syncro could be going out. double de-clutching will help to match the revs and should make the shift smoother. shifting like this is kind of weird at first, but it quickly can become second nature, and it sounds cool, too.
