A customer comes in today with a driveline rattle. On hearing the description, I suspect a sloppy transfer case chain........I couldn't have been more right.

Not at all. The chain is so slack that it cut it's way through the case.

So how is there an overcut on the lower right side? I'm not call BS, just pointing it out. It looks like the chain wore throigh on the inside by the seam and someone opened it up more with a die grinder to inspect it.

its the way the picture looks.. thats a piece of metal thats rolled out making it look like a side cut

... wow thats crazy! I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any oil in that case either.

Nope, the chain actually hangs down, out of the case, as you rotate the front driveshaft.

I sold the customer a rebuilt NP231 that I'll be swapping in. I'll most likely cannibalize the carcass for usable parts & scrap the rest.
