Shifting in 4 LOW Problems

Something that happened to me lately has got me worried. I can't shift into 4wd lo, or neutral without putting the jeep in reserve and inching back a few. What happens is: If i'm driving forward, and then stop and try and pit the jeep in 4wd lo, it won't pull back. It feels like it's jammed. IF I put it in reserve, and slowly inch back and pull the handle, it'l drop into 4 lo.....anyone got any ideas?

does it not go in if creeping along going forwards? should do...
when i had my 231, sometimes it would shift, sometimes it would (when stopped)
now i have the atlas, it will not shift when stopped, it has to be rolling.
try rolling it forwards, put the tranny in neutral, and then try to shift the t/case and let us know!

I suspect your shift fork (inside the transfer case) could be worn. Also, there are two plastic guides on the fork. If these break from wear things don't work right. I'm betting on one of the two

OK, I tested it, it will only shift IF rolling backwards. Otherwise, nothing..impossible to pul back. I can pull it into 4wheel hi easy..like nothing is wrong, it's just anyhting past that point. How hard is it to check if it's the fork, and how hard to replace.?

I have to be rolling to get my t-case to shift. No big deal, I don't look at it like it's broken.

everything is stock, except within the last two weeks have installed lockers front and rear and the posi-lock cable system for 4wd engagement. Other than that, everything is like it was from the factory.

drop the t/case and rip apart...
yeah it is a PIA, but if you want to check everything out correctly, that is normally the case my friend!

you in auburn wa or auburn mi? if washington, i get out there at times and could have a looksee, but never know where i am going next......
