trans problems or speed sensor?

5th gear has been making noise for a few weeks. now all gears are making same sound. feels and sounds likie the gear isnt completely engaged.

i pulled a code 15 on my 91 wrangler 5 speed. which is the VSS.

i replaced the clutch few mos ago.

before i do my usual and replace 10 things that cost more than a new toilet seat on a B1 bomber ($17,000 is what the pentagon claims they cost) only to find it needed a left handed bolt for 39 cents....is the VSS capable of messing up the gears a little? or is it the trans i need to replace?

pull the adapter housing out noting where it is orentated and check the speedometer gear. Its on an eccentric so it will fit in any position but only work correctly in one.

^^^^ X2 Que knows all bout this one... there are a few marks on the VSS housing one of them should be the one that lines up properly. I forgot how to calculate it.

im assuming that based on the response that it would affect the gears while driving?

Opihi59 09-19-2012 07:12 PM

Doesn't seem likely to affect the gears. The drive gear (metal, unless you put in an SYE kit), drives the driven gear (plastic) as the main shaft turns. This is all back on the T case. Should have no effect on your transmission gears.

The AX5 does have a history of dropping the 5th gear snapring, but it doesn't sound quite like that is going on either.

the speedometer gear may be disintegrating internally (read plastic in the gearing)

ok...im gonna put it up and listen for exactly where its coming from.
