tps question

hello..im here for some info on throttle position sensor..

I have a 1989 2.5..with 5spd

tps listed show 2 different tps..1 auto/1 stick

how can you tell difference?

problem with jeep is it wont go ..

using multimeter I tested tps

had 5v with key on but setting was .18 and wot movement 2.4 volts..

I had adjusted tps but it will only go to .50 ..and 2.4 at wot

so I order a tps for stick from rockauto..

im waiting for mail now..i will post back results

How do you tell the difference? Which trans do you have? It really is that simple.

ok like it will look different

got new tps and it works ,,

i have to reset it ..guess there is way for auto ,than another for stick..i didn't see fine print when reading on cell..

i set it like auto..

.90 closed ..5.14 at wot..

still drove bad..

just pulled fuel tank..looks like inside of paint can..but sock looks brand new as does pump..

i swapped a known to be good map sensor/and coil..

guess gas smelling like paint thinner must go ..

will post back after clean tank and fuel.

my son just brought this jeep..last month ...it was like this..

he is 20yrs old in marine corp...29 palms California..i came from texas to help him time is running out got to get back home..

Yeah, if it's been setting up any time at all, the gas is probably bad.

stange how tank is clean of debris.

its starting to look like jeep had driveability issues for awhile and others have tried.

pump and screen look new,o2 sensor is new,and cap wires.

it feels like its being choked.we have open exhaust, cat was glowing from too much fuel.

it wont go over say 40mph.it had 35s we tried smaller wheels and it wasnt the problem,

from reading this model has. no way of self check for codes
maybe I read more..on that and how fuel system works.it doesnt hold pressure after as manual says.

"glowing cat" and " cant go over 40mph" lead me to believe you have a very clogged cat

I have taken cat and muffler off and ran straight exhaust to rule out clogged exhaust.

it has the old system with single injector in carb

I havent touched egr valve yet..im going piece by piece.so I can see what cause is and if a no start condition happens I dont have to look beyond last change.

also on very low budget of 0 ..hard enough to put gas in,cali is 4 bucks gallon. 50 bucks just to test drive a few times..

Have you replaced fuel filter?
When you say "can't go over 40" are you meaning you can't accelerate past that?

right.40-50 mph..top speed.when cold quick start and go you might hit 60 but 5 mins into it is when it starts to slow than you feel drag..

if you drove like u stole it .1st 2nd red line ,3rd slow after 3000rpms

4th top 4000 rpm max.

going thru sensors now..coolant sensor failed ohms test.

ait sensor? in intake.passed ohms.

I borrowed multimeter never used this type.ohms is scale is auto set.so im assuming true reading.havent located user manual for it.

snap on,blue point model mt586b

im following factory manual found on morris4x4'

1993 is only manual listed.

What does this thing have for tire size and gear ratio? Is the engine falling flat on it's face or does it seem to run fairly well otherwise?

my son just got jeep,it looked nice has bfg 35x12.5 on 10.5 rim.

he drove it just around block..than next day found it wont go over 40mph..

exhaust leaked and intake..my son had tried to replace gasket.

thats the best I can say..he called me..

I come, open hood he starts it..engine shakes so bad it wants to fly out.

its a mess.

I find 2 cyls not firing by pulling plug wire while running.no change in rpm with wire off.

plugs fixed that..

I only did cold compression test..125psi all 4.

than I find tps .has 5v..than.18 volts to 2. 4 on tps travel.

I replace and now have .90@5.14 on tps travel.

it starts, stays running, high idle, just lack of power under load,no backfire, but u can hear bog and spuddering in exhaust.

times it feel good,,, cold start and go you will hit 5th @ 45 as if it was fine than bog starts

I smelled thinner vs gas when I took carb off for tps..

I have tank out now..and checking sensors,

Are you using a factory service manual for your troubleshooting?

Que89YJ 08-14-2013 11:05 AM

You need to run the full set of adjustemnts to see where you are at ISA, TPS, WOT, and fuel pressure . A bad injector will dump fuel and it is indicated by not being able to hold pressure after key off. Running rich is usually the O2 sensor putting out a bad reading. It is very very common to have a leak on the exhaust manifold from missing/lose bolts (especially in the rear near the firewall or a cracked exhaust manifold. The exhaust leak will allow air into the ehaust before the O2 sensor making it think it is running lean and cause the ecu to dump fuel.

The thread I posted below has links to Shaefs thread which has a bunch of great info as well as a link to the downloads for the factory service manual.
