Torque converter bolt torque misprint!

FYI the Factory service Manual for the '94 Wrangler lists the torque converter bolt torque at 55 ft/lbs. This is WAY more torque than the nuts on the torque converter can stand, it should be more like 30 ft/lbs.

Don't learn this the hard way, like I did.

Were you using old bolts or new bolts?

The 3 bolt convertors are 40 ft lbs, the 4 bolt convertors are 55 ft lbs. If you managed to break one, chances are that it wasn't a graded TC bolt, just some junk bolt. Those things are tough.

Yep, that's what the FSM says... Try it and you will pull the threads our of the nuts on the TC.

I've done it many times which makes me think that you have a bad convertor or the wrong sized bolts if you pulled the threads out with only 55 ft lbs.

Hmmm............ The threads that peeled off the bolts looked great and fit the bolts perfectly, only in the wrong location. It is a NAPA reman converter and I will verify the bolt size possibility when I get it all back out Saturday but doubt it. Ford calls for 30ft/lbs for the same size bolt in an F-150.

No idea who remanufacturs for NAPA, but you might want to try these guys for a replacement.

Transtar and Precision are good rebuilders, if you see anything that says DAACO - run.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will just be Heli-Coiling the nut plates and torquing to 30 ft/lbs this time. I doubt that I will need a new converter at this point.
