Torn between 9" and 12 bolt

ok, so i have the option of getting my hands on some really great axles. Not sure on the price yet, i will find out this afternoon though and post it up here. But i know that the Ford 9" has like 2:73 gears or something so it will obviously need to be regeared. The 12 bolt on the other hand already has 4:56's in it which is perfect. So im already leaning toward the 12bolt. any opinions from others out there? also, no shipping because he is going to texas to bring them back from his shop anyway, said he will never use them so im assuming i can get them cheap. but what would i be looking at price wise to get a regear done on an axle?

usually a regear on a 9" is pretty cheep if you bring the entire 3rd member to the shop with out the axle. Ballpark around 200? but you still have gear costs and rebuild kit. Is a 4.56 what you want to run?

If you plan on keeping this and wheel your jeep go with the 9". You won't have C clips to deal with,
if the 9" you are looking at has 31 spline shafts you are ahead in axle shaft strength. I belive the 9"
has a larger and better pinion support as well. Not to the mention that you can buy pretty much anything
for the ford.

9 inch all the way. Think about this, drag/race cars build these rearends for a reason. At the least you have a good platform to start with. Pinion angle is not that bad unless you have a lot of lift.

A 12 bolt is junk!!!!!!!!!!!

9". Mine is still sitting, untouched, but before the end of the year I want to have 4:88's and a Detroit and disk brakes on it. Then it's time for SOA. I gotta focus on my move for now though, then the Jeep comes into play.

I'd have to think that parts would be more readily available/cheaper for a 9" as well. Hell you can probably find a 3rd online that someone already has set up like you want

yea, ideally i'd like to run 4.56's but since the regear is so cheap, was expecting it to be more like 1000 bucks or something. Think i'll stick with the 9" if it is within a reasonable range. could make it a little project of my own. i work at a race shop at the university i go to, so i have access to every tool imaginable. thanks for the replies, no word on the price yet as my buddy who works with him is on lunch, i'll keep you posted.

Sorry to hi-jack, but what type of racing in particular does this shop cater to?

our race shop at school....we build and design from scratch legends cars, formula SAE, baja, and we do work on our NASCAR too which is set up for lowes motor speed way. we have CNC mills and lathes, 2 of every welder imaginable and like 5 full matco tool chests...basically an anything goes race shop. we bring our own stuff in too. but i am not familiar with doing gears, i've swapped motors, done custom fuel injections, but diff gears scare me lol. idk why

They scare you because if you don't do it right, it's an expensive lesson

My dad had a Dwarf Car for a couple seasons, he never did run pavement but they're fun. My brother has an injected 360 sprint car as well as a carburated spec sprint (lessd power, wingless, cast iron block and heads, etc).
Sounds like quite the shop!

nothing wrong with have two different bolt patterns, at least you know the rear wont break

9" are cool, definitely waaay better than a 12 bolt. Super cheap and huuuge after market for it.
