TJ tops on a YJ/CJ - bolt on as shown in JP
Are a bolt-on affair. The door frames of the doors are even interchangeable. Just swap out the striker pins.
The pic shows YJ doors on a TJ and vice versa This is the main page of the article. ![]() Just in case it was missed or no one has ever tried it/posted it yet.

I saw that article, but if i'm not mistaken i believe they had to do quite a bit of adjusting to make them work such as the difference in the angle of the windshields on TJ and YJ etc... Cool article though

You gotta be kidding me. It took 10 years to figure this out!? I can't believe that someone didn't do this article 10 years ago when the TJ first came out. It seems like it would have been the natural thing to do when the TJ first came out. Just to see how different or similar it was. I always thought they looked like they should interchange but had always assumed that it had been tried many times but failed.
Now the JK I don't think is worth trying. Its pretty obvious that its entirely different. Not to knock the JK but I kind of feel like the TJ was the last of a breed. EDIT: Just out of curiousity has anyone ever tried to put CJ doors on a YJ or TJ. I've seen a YJ front end on a CJ before. But I think they used the whole clip.

CJ doors should fit the YJ tub and vice versa. The differences between the bodies are the body mount locations, the center dash and the defroster position, in a nutshell.
Which brings me to an important question. I'd been debating to start a thread about this, but figured it'd be better here. Since the JP guys swapped out the factory roll bar for TJ ones and trimmed the windshield frame, with appropriate modifications, would the TJ windshield frame fit the YJ body? Well, unless the windshield frame width of the TJ is wider. If you use the TJ frame, you'd have to use the hinges as well. In comparing the hinges, the top hinge would fit, but it's the rear hinge that's beefier and more contoured. Seems like with a few drilling it can be done. Thoughts? |

For some reason I can picture YJ tub with a CJ nose swap and a TJ windshield and roll cage.
^^Project for someone with waaay too much time on their hands. ![]() (But if its done, I'd like to see it, that sounds kinda interesting.) |

i believe they ended up using tj half doors on the yj. not sure if they needed to do it to fit on the tj upper doors or if they did it just to have tj doors.

I would be very interested in swapping my YJ windshield frame for a TJ one just to get better windshield wipers.

I am fairly certain a TJ windshield will not fit a YJ. Not unless you cut off the cowl and switch that too. The cowl houses all the TJ wiper arms, linkage etc...

dmcannally, you can upgrade the windshield wipers without having to change the entire windshield, frame, etc. 4wd sells them, though I've never upgraded.
Jeepfreak, what about using the upper portion of the TJ hinge and mating it to the lower portion of the YJ hinge while retaining the YJ linkage? Still don't think it could work? These replacement frames that are sold require drilling anyway, so if someone has fab work experience, it could be done. And ever since reading this article, I'm seriously thinking about it. ![]() |
