Tire Carrier Plans

Hello Everyone,

I'm going to build my own spare tire carrier, and have been looking for plans. Does anyone know of any good ones? I think there has been a post or maybe a reply on this before, but I couldn't find it. Probably user error. :-)

Thanks in advance.
Tommy

I've been to that site before, before I was planning to build a carrier. I can't get the site to come up anymore though.

My main concern is the hinge and latch. I think the hinge would work if I used some heavy tubing and a grade 8 bolt. If I wanted to get real creative, I could put some bearings in it. But the latch is beyond me.

Any other ideas?

I made mine myself and for the hinge I used a piece of solid bar and then a pipe that slid over the bar which was welded to the swing out part. For the latch, we used a long bolt and welded a round thing to the top of it, not sure what it is called and welded a half nut to the bumper, works great w/ no rattles at all.

Here is a pic, not the best though.

Sounds pretty clean and simple. But do you mean by "half nut?"

Thanks!

By half nut i mean a jam nut, it has like half the threads as a regular nut, hence half nut. Sorry bout the confusion.

I had a half nut once....she was very disappointed about that!

Thanks for the info. The jeepfabrication.com site is working now. Probably user error.
