Timming Chain or water pump????
I have a 94 with a 2.5..I am hearing chattering noise from the front of the motor.Not sure what it is.Any sugg.

Might not be the same problem but my 89 4.2 (164k) was rattling really bad at higher rpms,the timing chain had so much slack I don't know how it even ran.Changed the chain and the noise is gone.

I had a similar problen and it was the timing chain tensioner. It had come loose and would not stay in place when I inspected it.
Take the fan and belt off, run the motor for a minute and see if the noise stops. If the noise is still there get a three foot piece of hose and put one end to the timing cover and the other to your ear and listen for the noise there and in different places on the motor. Where the noise is loudest is where the problem is. BE CAREFUL when doing this since the engine needs to be running!!
