THANKS YJ Fab guys! I have a new tire carrier!

Thanks to all the fab guys on the YJ forum, I have a new homebuilt rear bumper and tire carrier. I read all the posts a couple of times and studied all the photos, and talked it over with a great designer/welder I know. He added some of his own ideas, and this is what he came up with. I am so grateful to everyone who posts build instructions and photos! Thank you!

Of course, I have more questions.
1) I was planning to go get mil surplus jerry cans, but I read some stuff that indicated that maybe I should buy new. If the consensus is to buy new, what should I look for? What should I absolutely stay away from?

2) He has already started on the front bumper. Does everyone agree that shackles are a better idea than tow hooks? I am not trying to start an argument, just trying to confirm what I think I have determined from about 50 Jeepforum posts on the subject. Thanks again for all the help and support!

Wow you need to add 10inch long shackles to offset the weight of that beast.

I would be really concerned about ripped that off, or something ripping off, but maybe I get closer to trees than you, Too close sometimes, bang! Will the gas cans be wider than the jeep, tie them down good for highway speeds! Your in Nevada so I guess it would work great long distance desert or street rig.

In my opinion, that is way too much. It looks like scaffolding to me or a homemade carrier for a work truck. It being wider and taller than the jeep makes it nonfunctional in my mind. Luckily for all of us we get to do what we want to our jeeps. Hope it works out just like you want it too

If you look at it long enough it almost looks like it was an outdoor BBQ and you just removed the cooking part and left the frame.
not knocking it ( I HAVE DONE WEIRD THINGS TO MY JEEP TOO! )
Like all projects, if you like it dont worry what others say

As far as anything getting ripped off by trees, well, there aren't any trees in the Mojave Desert. The rack as pictured is only for trips. A cooler sits in the top and the gas cans fit into the racks on the sides. Even with the gas cans mounted, it won't be wider than the Jeep. As for weight, it really isn't that heavy, but then maybe I am underestimating how heavy it really is. I don't know how else to mount a 31" tire and a cooler to the rear of the Jeep and still have clearance in and out of washes. As someone pointed out, it is a Jeep, so it is always a work in progress. I didn't have nearly a grand for a bumper/tire carrier/cooler/fuel carrier. This whole thing cost $250.00, and I think it will be functional. I will find out for sure on President's Day weekend. I will probably be back in the forum to ask questions about how to improve it then. The only thing that I haven't put on it yet is a jack mount, but then I don't own a jack yet so no worries.
Regarding pics of the swivel point, I can post some as soon as I get to a different computer.
A grill? Seriously? Ouch.

No hard feelings. Its just what popped into my head when I saw the shape.

Have you seen my carrier I just made? Its not pretty and some would say its crap, but its functional like yours is

I couldn't understand why several people thought that the rack was wider than the tub, since I knew it wasn't. I was finally able to look at the image again, and it is distorted for some reason. it sure looks like it, but the rack is definitely not wider than the tub.

Thats cool. Try taking a side shot from the front. I am waiting to see the final rack fully loaded. What are the specs on the square tubing?
