i agree. i thought u could pretty much put any year flexplate on a 4.2 so you can mach the tranny and it should be fine. he said the ringgear on this flexplate sits about a 1/4" in more (recessed) towards the engine than the old one. i guess that 1/4" was enough to put enough pressure to crack stuff. oh and a warning to anyone who needs a flexplate. beware 4 flexplates in a row from advance auto where bent in one spot. part numbet Z-187 from ATP.. thank you very much for your help. this forum has gotten me through so much ..

new update on clinking noise.

got my jeep from shop I bought the new 4.2 from today. started up and starter clunk was gone and so was noise. so as im driving home im feeling some vibrations. I pull over and look and these retarts put my transfer case drop back on wrong instead of between frame and cross member. they put cross member right up against frame and put bolt and spacer under it. so more or less bolt-spacer-cross member- frame. now I get home throw it in park and here the tink tink tink noise is again. what the hell is making this noise. so now 5 new flex plates new torque converter and $750 to shop to fix it. but didn't. im lost. im at my end with this jeep. what the hell is making this sound. its very clear metallic and right at bellhousing with a stethascope. I did notice I can slow it down to almost gone by turning my timing down to like 0 btdc or less. so I pulled my new cardone pre smog distributor out and droped in my old motorcraft 18r 13r dissy. thinking something is wrong with timing. nope. I did notice that there is no stop inside the vacuum canister of the motorcraft dizzy. no adjustment I guess. the allen key just slides all the way in. like its a open hole. (not sure if that is normal). any and all help would be great guys. thanks

Maybe run it for a while, and see what develops. Have you tried removing the sheet metal cover plate?

The only brand of flex plate I am seeing is ATP (NAPA has Balkamp, probably the same). Theat the same one that keeps breaking here so it worries me to buy one. Going used means I might get one about to crack. eBay also has a Pioneer brand but I don't see that anywhere else which doesn't instill confidence either.

Here are the options I can find for 1988-1990 4.2L after a bunch of looking:
Z-187 ATP
FRA-410 Pioneer
A310 MALKO
33004359 Crown (AMC number)

So I emailed Golen (the guys that build big nasty stroker 4.2Ls) and asked what flex plates they used for a TF999. Crown was the answer with zero issues. I found them cheapest on JC Whitney for $60 shipped (free shipping and a 10% off code, ALERT49). Got one on the way. Probably tear it down after my 9/21 ride.
