TF999 Leak

I posted this under the engines and drivetrain tech section but didnt get any views (let alone responses) and will try my luck posting it here.

Does anyone know what this tiny hole is for? It slowly leaks ATF but I cant seem to find a use for it. It it located in the bottom of the tranny just before it connects to the transfer case.

The tcase is filled with ATF also, so it might be coming from there. The purpose of that hole is the let fluid out so you know there is a leak between the cases. Really.

rear trans seal or front tcase seal most likey. either is not a big deal if you can pull the tcase off and get a look.

What he said.
The guy who rebuilt my trans said the same thing. But he filled in that hole to keep dirt and mud and nasty water out of it.

I've got the exact same problem. slow drip of ATF from where AutoTrans meets TCase. Looks exactly the same as your picture.
Drained the TCase.
removed both the Driveshafts
Put a Jack to hold up the rear of TCase and dropped the skid plate
Unbolted TCase and removed it.

At this point I had a small amount of ATF leaking from the rear end of the Transmission. I pulled the rear seal cleaned out area and waited until the ATF stopped dripping. Replaced the new seal. Put the transfer case back in place and the second in made contact with the Transmission, the ATF drip began. Same place, same speed.

I don't think it's coming from the TCase, there's no fluid in it. I'm stumped as to what else it could be. Did you fix yours?

Yeah it fixed it. When I disconnected the tcase it was plainly obvious the leak was coming from the rear seal of the tranny. Sounds similar to what you saw when you disconnected yours, so dont know why yours is still leaking.

I ended up changing the ATF in the transmission and as of now, not a drop has leaked out.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it might have been a combo of overflow and a blown rear seal.

How did you get the shift linkage reconnected? I'm having a hell of a time getting the bushing attached to the rod back in place.

I pried it out easy enough when I was disconnecting the Tcase, but getting it back in has been an all morning event. Is there a trick to this. I tried to pull the bushing off, but it's on there pretty good.
