So last week i was driving to work as usual and i look down at my temp guage and it is on 0 degrees. When i turn the key to the on position the needle barely moves up about 1 milimeter up and then returns to 0. This is a real problem for me because i run my taurus fan off of a switch to turn it off and on manually. The guys at autozone and advance couldnt help me find the temp sensor located by the firewall on the intake. So my question is, is my guage dead? and what could i look for to solve this. I cant really drive my Jeep without a guage. :cheers2:
There are 2 temp sensors on a YJ 4.0. One that provides temp input for the ECU, and that one is on the front of the engine (thermostat housing) and one that provides temp input to the gauge. This one is on the back of the block, on the top, drivers side - it has a single wire going to it. This sensor could be bad or the single wire could be off.
Years ago when I was a dealer tech for Volvo/BMW/Mercedes-Benz, we used to call those single wire senders T.U.R.D. sensors. Temperature Up, Resistance Down.
The sender unit may be faulty, and it's easy to test the gauge & wiring and rule them out. The gauge is always 12V+ supplied, and the single wire sender completes the circuit by supplying the ground with more/less resistance depending on the temperature.
Test the gauge & wiring by grounding the sender wire to the engine (or anywhere) and with the key on the gauge should peg the "hot" reading. If the gauge works, replace the sender.
You mean physically locate it on the Jeep or they couldn't find a replacement.
Either way the sender is on the head, if looking from the front, it's all the way back and on the right corner. There should be a violet colored wire to it, that's the wire feeding the guage.
Sorry about my lack of clarity guys. They couldnt find the part on their parts database. Ill test the sender unit and wire today and see what i come up with.
Head to the dealer, that is where I had to go and they had it in their parts dept by noon the next day, it is a little under $20 IIRC.
