Temp Gauge

So my temp gauge hasn't worked since I got my jeep back in Oct. Just for the hell of it I thought I would take the gauge cluster out and make sure all th ewiring was kosher. Since I put the whole thing back together the gauge has been acting like it is possesed. Every so often it just starts flying back and forth eratically for about 30 sec.'s and then it will stop again. I have been trying to figure out if there is something that makes it happen like when I'm idiling or anything but it seems to be completely random? Anyone have ideas better than my demon possession theory?

i'll bet it is the contact of the gauge to the plastic film ...
if that makes sense. take the gauge off, and clean the contacts... put it back on. i bet that will fix it.
