A tale of two Jeeps- which should I fix?
Jeep A:
1987 YJ VIN: 2BBY.... Engine: 4.2L I6 with Motorcraft Carb Tranny: BA10/5 Also: Rear defroster, aftermarket radio, working seat risers. Top once had a flashing light attached, so there are three mounting holes in it. Needs: Oil Pan, Rod cap, floor pan work (my seatbelt is no longer fastened to the floor), rework the guages, new choke? Jeep B: 1990 YJ VIN: 2J4F... Engine 2.5L I4 Tranny: AX5 Also: Rear defroster, rear wiper, fog lights, converted headlights to use H4 bulbs Needs: Radio, new seat risers that actually move, seat sliders, new alternator? Fix backwindow latches so i can open it without pulling on the cable inside and so it will trigger the wiper switch. First question, unrelated kinda.... I've tried finding it everywhere, what is the 2BBY vin code? All the Jeep related ones I've seen start with 2J for wranglers built in Ontario. Does this make it a rare Wrangler (ie, such an early model that its unique, compared to wranglers that start with 2J?) Second, I need to get rid of one of these (need the $$) but am willing to rob/trade some parts (the easy ones!) between the two before I do that. My question is, which one should I focus on fixing (thus making the other one a donor, essentially) I have someone who's been willing to work on the floor and engine of the '87 for a while but being that its pro bono, it obviously falls on the back burner until I finally say "hey! get your butt out here!" lol. Both jeeps need some body work besides the floor - there's a crack in the front passenger fender of the '90 that looks pretty nasty... I'm not going to go swapping the engine/tranny or anything, but switching the tops to keep the wiper or get rid of the holes if need be is an option. Or swapping the working seat risers into the other one, etc. either way, aftermarket gauges may be in order for either one... but anyhoo... Obviously the better tires will end up on whichever heep I keep... So, yeah, which one do I keep and which one do I sell? I'll post some pics of each one to try to help the jury out as well... Thanks guys!

Id go with jeep B- that tranny is better + it has the 4.10's and both those engines will last you a long time .... but are you going to hwy drive it often vs how much you wheel ?

This post is all about the '87 - I need to get pics of the '90 still (too cold to attempt today)
The '87 along with its younger '99 cousin that my parents once owned: Had fun driving it back to the sugar shanty one year: This is it about a year and a half ago - its since been moved in preparation of it being picked up to be fixed, which it still hasn't: Damage to the oil pan: Front driver's floor: This is the seatbelt hanging through the floor on the left: This one will likely be painted a metallic red (which i believe was the original color - the radiator supports weren't painted the blue very well) similar to the '99 in the first picture. I'll get pictured of the '90 soon. |
