Tailgate into TRUCK TAILGATE?

Okay yeah the title is confusing but me and a buddy were discussing how we could turn our swing-out tailgates into swing-down tailgates (like a truck bed). Has anyone done this??? Cant be that hard, neither of us have the tire carriers on. PICS?? Thanks

Are they the same size? I thought about that but i thought they might be bigger (wider). Plus i would like to keep the latch (if its even possible). And where could i get one?

yes they are the same size. just need to drill holes for the new hingle locations and make some brackets for the cables to attach to. there are several write ups on the forum on this. i belive when i was doing my research i found a guy who made some kind of latch system using his stock latch. the main problem is you wil need something on both sides. i'm sure you can find a cj tailgate online, maybe a junkyard. i bought mine for $20 locally.

I used my YJ hinges, and just bolted them to the bottom, below the tailgate so they open down....

bottom left is the hinge, one each side, I use a flat piece of amuminum, to hide the dents and things on the back of the gate, and another on the bottom where the hinge bolts to, for reinforcement, and to level it...if you add a piece to the tailgate you have to add a piece to the bottom...or the hinge will lean in and wont tighten straight....and put a chain on the inside to hold it, works not bad for me. The Yj hinges are way more duralble then the CJ as well, the longer hinge gives the gate a solid feeling

bad place to blow a bead, on a side hill....LOL....everyone is holding it up while we change the tire....that was an experience

I used a cj tailgate on mine and only have a latch on one side and that thing doesnt move in the slightest. For the one sided latch to work(for cj gate) make sure it is tight before you put the weatherstripping on and then once you put it on, it is as tight as can be with no rattling.

That is a killer idea!

I probably would have just done the full CJ conversion, but this way sounds like it might work a bit easier. I know you said you reinforced the body where the hinges now mount, did you drop the gas tank to mount a plate behind that or no?

Also, do you sit on the tailgate at all?
