T-case shifter Z-gate elimination write-up
 
Okay, I know that every little thing on a stock Jeep has a purpose. So for those that would find themselves vehemently opposed to the elimination of the Z-gate on the T-case shifter, PLEASE, MOVE ALONG! Personally, I have altered quite a few things on my Jeep, as most of us do. This one has always bugged me, so I finally did something about it.


Here is the T-case shifter with an intact Z-gate that "locks out" neutral & 4LO, requiring you to move the shifter to the right to access those functions. It's just a separate plate attached to the main assembly. I always hated that side-to-side movement requirement.



I simply drilled the heads off of the rivets that hold the Z-gate onto the shifter assembly & pried the gate off of the main assembly.


After prying it off the rivets, I bent it back and forth and it snapped right in two!



Here is the shifter minus the Z-gate. It's now a straight throw forward & back to engage any T-case function without moving the shifter side-to-side.


Of course, now there is a reason to pay a bit closer attention to how you operate the T-case shifter to avoid selecting the wrong function.

Most of the newer 4x4 vehicles dont have the z gate anymore. I guess they were worried that you would pull it too hard and it would move too far. I need to do this to my truck thanks for the write up.

I couldn't get it to move to the right to go to neutral or 4 low going to have to check this out.

There is a bolt that the shifter pivots on, and a spring that keeps it to the left & out out the "Neutral" and "4LO" portion of the gate. Sometimes that bolt/pivot joint gets seized up.

Eliminating the Z gate eliminates this from happening as well.

I have an idea, a few cases of beer and some time with my rig, will definately give you ideas (mostly about setting fire to it!)

So you can just go from 2 high straight back to 4 lo?

Is it easy to tell when you are in 4high.

How well does it stay in neutral, like for flat towing? Would you trust it to stay in neutral for 600 miles while being towed?

This seems like a really good mod, if these items were gonna be OK.

i'm in the same boat, do you trust this not to slip out of neutral when towing. I flat tow or use a dolly when I want to go far with the YJ. my tcase is like my backup in case the tranny falls into gear.

Very easy. It has a well defined engagement point.

I trust it as much as New Process wanted me to when they built it. The "Z" gate was not always existent on T-case shifters, it's an "idiot-proofing" addition.

This seems like a really good mod, if these items were gonna be OK.
I have no negative issues with it, only easier engagement.

For my trust issues, see above. If you're flat towing your YJ with the transmission in neutral, you're doing it wrong. I'll post up the flat towing instructions, quoting straight from the owner's manual.

Jeep's instructions for flat towing.

I dug out my '91 Owner's Manual and quoted the following verbatim.




Page 125 of the 1991 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual states;

1. Shift transfer case to 2H and check that the 4WD light goes out.

2. Drive vehicle 10 ft. (3 m) rearward and then 10 ft. (3 m) forward to make sure the axle is disengaged.

3. Shift transmission to Neutral.

4. Turn off engine with the ignition key in the unlocked OFF position.

5. Shift transfer case lever from 2H to N (Neutral) position.

6. Shift manual transmission into gear or automatic transmission into P (Park).

WARNING: With the transfer case in N (Neutral) postion, the vehicle could roll unexpectedly. The parking brake should always be applied before the tow bar is attached.

7. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.



You may want to cut & paste that into a word document, then print it out to keep in the glovebox.

The Z gate is just so you don't accidentally go into neutral or low when shifting. There is a detent plate inside the case that keeps it in the position you select. You'll be able to feel this better once the gate is gone.

A lot of people have no idea about that aspect. Most folks have an older Jeep with no owner's manual, and common logic would lead one to think that everything should be in neutral. I cut & pasted that info in my post from previous posts. I've provided it for a lot of people that didn't have access to a manual.
