Synchros shot, make things worse by continuing to use?

Hello all, first post here,

I'm considering the purchase of a '90 Wrangler, SE I believe with a 5 spd. Synchros for 3 and 4 are gone. Double clutching helps on the upshifts, but I couldn't in my short test drive, get a heel toe to actually stick without grinding.

With that said, knowing that it has the problem, will I make it worse by continuing to drive on the otherwise worn out tranny, or will it just end up being annoying.

I use to drive a Nissan pickup with 300K+ that had the same problem and didn't seem to be effected reliability wise, but whats your experience?

Thanks,
Chris

I maybe wrong but that may have the Peugot tranny init. If so the only thing that won't do anymore damage to it is take it out and set it in the corner of the garage. Eventually the gears themselves will go and or it will start popping out of gear alot if you keep running it.

Great. The person selling said engine was replaced with a 95, I wonder (doubt) the trans was as well. In any case,...

How much is a rebuild/good running used example?

Thanks,
Chris

i have an ax5 that had the 1st and 2nd synchros worn. had to drive away in 3rd at times. got a "transparts" overhaul kit from e-bay for about 120$, took the tranny out myself, took it to my mechanic, he replaced everything and helped me put it back in, and installed a new clutch, all for 250$. i recommend it
if the synchros are all there is to it, i wouldn't be to worried about it. i drove mine 6 months before repairing it..

If it's a 4 cylinder it's an AX5. If it's a 6 cylinder, it's an AX15. The Peugeot went away after March 1989. If it's hard to shift into gear, it is possible to bend a shift rail.

To answer the original question
If it were mine, i would get it taken care of as soon as possible.
You risk chipping teeth on your gears if you have to grind it into everygear.
That will just add to the bill to rebuild it later on.
Plus double clutching can get real old quick

When my AX-5 finally went out in December, I got a used one with 85k on it for $825. Around this area, a rebuilt was going for $1350 and a brand new was almost $2500 IIRC.

Hope I didn't get overly hosed, but I needed something done quick. DD'er and all you know... :

Not sure what I'll be doing. I tried to start the Jeep this morning and I'm pretty sure the battery is dead. Need to replace it and see what to do from there.

This is somewhat of a family use second car. Winter driving and something for my wife to learn stick on so she can drive my car.

I think if I did anything I'm going to go with a rebuild of the original eventually (next year?), first I need to figure out what the original engine/tranny was, and what the current one is.

Thanks,
Chris
