SYE Install
Alright I'm about to order an SYE, probably the Super Short SYE from P.O.R.C. I have a transfer case drop installed on from the PO and I'm gettin rid of that for the SYE and CV. From looking at it, I'm assuming the transfer case/tranny are supported by the skid plate, and the actual drop is just from the spacers and the bolts. (Correct me if I'm wrong) So the uninstall for that should be pretty straight forward. From everything Ive read and searched for the install for the SYE seems pretty straightforward as well. Just kinda follow the instructions nothin too difficult..The main question I have is, is it easier to completely take the transfer case apart from the tranny and out of the jeep, or is it just as easy or easier to leave it in and split it while its still under the jeep?
Also, I haven't read anythin that says you need any crazy special tools..again, correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks guys.

You are right the drop is just from the spacers and the transfer case/tranny are supported by the skidplate. I have not installed the SYE so not sure what to tell you about taking it out of the Jeep but the writeups I have read about it all show it being done on a bench. You may have it already but here is a writeup about the SYE install from the manufacturer. http://www.jbconversions.com/pages/products/np231/np231j_short_sye_ins.html

Well I just left it in the jeep, seemed just as easy to leave it it. You take all of the internals out to switch stuff anyway, plus with the lift and tires i could sit straight up under it. No crazy tools needed, maybe some snap ring plyers and that is about it. Did it in a night, and this was the first one me and my buds did. Yeah it helps to have at least one other person if not two there. Good luck

Internal and external snap ring pliers. For taking the transfer case out ratching wrenches (like gear wrench) help alot. You do not need to take the transfer case out but it makes it alot easier. Especially if you have not done it before.

Easier to work on while standing.
I had to cut down the shift fork shaft, glad I had it on the bench. And get the snap ring pliers. |

Definantly get the snap ring pliers. Those little devils will test your patience big time if you don't. With the transfer case on the bench, you can replace all the seals and give it a good cleaning too.

I agree good snap ring pliers and a ratchet wrench to take it out. I took me about 2-3 hours for everything. I also had to cut down the shift fork. you will be amazed on how easy it really is to do this. While in there make sure you check everything out to since you have it apart. I replaced all the bearings and seals while I had it apart. One other thing of note. Make sure you get the oil pump tube back in tight.

I've got the snap ring pliers already from when I had to fix my clutch pedal. I'm gonna attempt to do it while its still in, hopefully i dont regret it. Is there a certain kit or years of the YJ that the xcase shift fork doesnt need to be cut down?

Your installation instructions should tell you what length you need it to be..... seems like the earlier YJs need cut down....my '87 didn't need to be cut. I'm doing the SYE on my '93 tomorrow and from what I've read the 93 shouldn't need to be cut either..I'll find out tomorrow.
Oh yeah....I'm doing it with the Tcase still under the Jeep this time.

My 95 had to be cut. It's not a big deal at all. Also don't forget if you're pulling out the drop brackets you'll need the stock length bolts. The ones for the drop will NOT work!!
