Swapping in a D30 haha
So on my front axle the ball joints and tire rod ends are shot, the housing is all rusted out and so are the axle u-joints
I found a d30 4:10's with low miles on it for 200$, i figure i'll buy it and replace everything and paint it. And then swap it in its out of a 92' and mines a 91' with 4:10's, just wanted to ask if i'm missing something or is this a direct blot up ? and whats the best stuff to paint them with after sanding off some surface rust? EDIT: i already have 4:10's, this isn't for the purpose of re-gearing

Again bolt right in. BEST paint would be something called POR15 Costs about $40 a pint sticks to rust very well nd NEVER comes off. Painted the whole frame, springs, axles, EVERYTHING on a 47 willys with it 7 years ago. Jeep has been sitting outside for those 7 years. Not a spot of rust is coming back through. Even did the tub with it before going desert camo

Krylon works but the rust will come through with in 6 months if even that. You would have to totally strip the axle down to use krylon. Thats whats great about the POR15 it paints over all the stuff you would normally have to take off.

i finally got around to giving the rear a look over
i noticed that fluid leaked out of the pinion seal badly, like gushed out. Then i pulled the cover and wow the ring gear is all chewed up. i'm no expert gear installer but here's my question. To replace the ring gear is it just a matter of undoing the bolts to the carriage and replacing and putting it back in ? Also, the yolk gives like a 1/4 inch in and out if i pull on it, would this be solely attributed to the bad pinion seal ? or do i have more serious problems |

I regeared my D30 and D35 just recently. It sounds like you'll need to replace the whole shabang in the rear. If that's the case you'll hear a lot of guys telling you to get an 8.8 with the 4.10's that came stock, which is what I will tell you too. There is a pic that Mean Max put up with all the 8.8 axle codes. If you want to regear yourself beware. Its a major PITA.

i just did an 8.8 in my buddies jeep last weekend
i'm waiting for my dad's mountaineer to die so i can take the one out of that however, my d35 is fine. i'm trying to fix a d30 i have so i can swap it in my jeep to replace the existing one. but i'm finding ring and pinion sets to only be like $100 to $300 and the pinion looks fine, so i'm looking at it i don't see why i can't just undo the two straps and pull the assembly out, take out the bolts on the gear an remove/replace, and button it back up. I would just try it but every one woes about gearing so i'm guessing this should be more complicated then i think. |
