Swap trannys in 94 2.5

I blew my tranny after a rebuild when the mechanic didnt put gear oil in. I know, Im a *******, and should have checked it, but hindsight 20/20. Anyway, trying to find a new one is like digging for gold. A guy I work with says a ford ranger tranny will swap out, with a bell housing adapter kit. Is this true? The price range is over $300 difference, in ranger to wrangler. Obviously, the ranger is cheaper. But I need to know, so I dont go buying this ford tranny, and the damn thing doesnt fit. Please help!
