I gotta say, this thread is pretty funny! Believe me, I'm stumped a lot more often than you may possibly think!

But thanks to MANY wonderful people in the Jeep community, especially here on JF, I have acquired more random Jeep knowledge than I ever thought I would. I only hope that passing along the things I've learned will somehow repay a portion of the debt of gratitude that I owe to so many.

And with that, I will now stump myself & ask for YOUR help!

I purchased a transfer case from Craigslist two days ago, sight unseen for $100 and a buddy picked it up for me. All the owner could tell me was that it was from a Cherokee (XJ or ZJ was not specified) and he didn't know what model it was. I bought it anyway.

As it turns out, it is an NP242 Part-time/Full-time transfer case. I am pretty familiar with these as I have swapped an NP249 for an NP242 in a ZJ I used to have, and our family WJ & our son's ZJ both have them too.

However, this one has something I've never seen. It seems to have 2 fluid lines running in/out above the front yoke. To where? For what? It's marked as a 242 AMC, but the build date is 3-15-96 which was long after AMC was dead & gone.

I don't know about a factory option for that Max but I do know of a mod for the NP231 that involves drilling and tapping the huge steel plugs and putting a hose fitting in each connected by a clear hose. It allows for easier fluid changes, plus you can see the color with the clear hose.

I'm sure that's not the answer but that's what I would use it for.

Maybe some kind of fitting for a cooler since it was a part-time/full-time case? It does a mini oil pump on the output shaft, correct?

I have stumped Mean Max. and Max, that looks like someone did it themselves? Maybe to help the fluid flow through the transfer case?

I don't know, it looks like the case was cast with two flat spots there meant just for the purpose of making a hole for those nipples.

I agree, I have seen the casting bosses on the cases before. I've just never seen them used.

I can't believe that the small slinger pump on the tailshaft would be able to supply the volume/pressure that a line of that size would require.

You can bet I'll be tearing into it to see what's going on.

guess we will never know. i searched for a pic of the inside of the 242. it doesn't look like you could tell where the bumps were on the outside. maybe to somehow strengthen the case?

Max... I have figured out why you have never seen those lines before in a Jeep.

What you apparently have is a hummer 242 transfer case.

Inside you should see a cooling loop. (which is under recall) http://www.hummerknowledgebase.com/rungear/cooloop.html

now other then this I have no information on HOW it cools.... etc..

more info

Transmission fluid driven by transmission pressure of aproximately 90- 120 psi, goes through a cooler integrated with the engine oil cooler. From the cooler, the fluid goes though an intercooler loop inside the transfer case, and then back to the transmission. There is a bypass valve in circuit there to prevent the cooler fluid from all draining into the transmission pan.

AM General, producer of the H1 Hummer.

What do I do with that?
