Strange Starting Problem

Last night when I went to start my Jeep, it seemed as if the starter was having trouble turning the engine over... like something was fighting it. It's hard to explain, but it almost mimicks a low battery condition. But then, it will get passed it and fire up. It has done this a handful of times since I installed the MC2150. Starter and battery along with battery cables are all new within the last year. Any ideas?

Condensation or a partial ground fault? I coated the bolts of my cables running on the starter with liquid electrical tape, but I had no issues to begin with.

your contacts are gettting stuck in the started sylanoid(sp?). next time it does it, take a hammer or a pipe and tap the littlething attached to the starter. i bet ya it will turn right over.

I am beginning to think this is a problem with the altenator. This morning was another hard start, but it did turn over...eventually. While driving in to work this morning, I noticed that the blinkers were blinking slowly. The voltage gauge on the dash is reading about 8 volts. Obviously, that is low. Is there any way for me to test the alt, or can I get it tested somewhere? (other than my mechanic )

to test the alt, start the jeep, turn the headlights on, and pull the +pos cable off the battery. if the alt is good, the jeep will stay running, if not is will stall out.

battery was totally dead this morning...with jumper cables attached, the volt gauge read 12volts....started the jeep fine, and disconnected the cable from my Rover, volts dropped back down below 8.

you can go to Advance or autozone and get the alt checked for free.

Make sure the belt is tight also. But as long as it is, I'd guess it is the alternator.
Now, you can replace it if it's bad, or you can, if you have basic tools and ability, rebuild it with new brushes and a voltage regulator.
