Stock Guages with Vortec Motor

Putting a 4.8 Vortec in my 93 YJ. If I use the jeep oil pressure sender and water temp sender do I need to run them through the old jeep ecm or can I run them directly to the guages? Same question for the speedo if I use the existing speed sensor in the NP231. I'm thinking I'll have to use a dakota digital converter if I want to use the jeep tach unless someone has a better idea?? Thanks.

No the gauges are not run through the ECM (except the Tach) on a 93 YJ.

When I put my 5.3 in....

I tapped the Oil Filter bypass cover to 1/8 NPT and installed the stock Jeep pressure sensor. The stock gauge works perfectly.

The Voltmeter works perfectly but that was easy. All it needs is a switched 12v+ source.

For the temp gauge I used an Autometer adapter and screwed the stock Jeep sensor into the 12mm plugged hole at the rear of the passenger side head.

For the Speedo the Jeep VSS in the Jeep NP231 has 3 terminals. One is ground, one is the signal to the speedo and the other is a 5 volt + source which you can get from the GM ECM. My speedo works perfectly.

For the tach a Dakota Digital adapter is supposed to work. I have not messed with this just yet so I can't say if it works.

HI,
Why in the world are you attempting this job without having a Jeep Factory Service Manual? This makes no sense to me. Until you try to help yourself, I'm sure not going to waste time on your question.

Looks like you better pick up a FSM and promptly apologize to this guy^. It sounds like he's willing to impart his wealth of knowledge onto you once you've proven you're worthy.

Ps. The FSM doesn't cover engine swaps.

What DockedWage said sounds about right. I'm not at that stage of my swap yet but I'm thinking I'll just re-wire everything directly from the sensors to the gauges so I don't have to mess around with any of the factory plugs/stamped ribbon wiring behind the gauges.

One reason I'm doing the stroker install. Mount it and go... Good luck with your swap

JRMBOAT,

Not sure how far along you are but here's a link to my build thread when I did the 5.3 in my 92 YJ:

http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...completed.html

You'll find some good stuff in there. If you need more details on a particular issue with this swap just ask. That's what forums are all about...sharing information and lessons learned.

HI,
Yes I did. I encouraged him to get a FSM. It will be the best investment he's ever made. None of you said that. But, it needed to be said.

I am trying to figure out how a FSM would help in this case. I cant see where it would be very useful since it doesnt cover a vortec engine swap or any for that reason.

P.S. Not good Karma coming your way for that one.

in my engine swap the only thing i used from a fsm is color codes for wiring. and that was minimal.
