stock gears in an 89 YJ

anyone know what a stock 89 2.5L 4 cyl YJ may have , I know the geas have never been altered. I am jsut trying to find out because I want to run 33's and need to know if it will be able to handle it with the stock axles and diff's with no adjusments right away.

I do plan on swapping in a currie 60 in the rear and a 44 hopefully from a yard somewhere later on down the line, but those are future plans.

The jeep isnt a road jeep its being built just for trail so I am not worried at all about how it will react on the road, except maybe for short distances.

If your pumpkin still has the little metal tag you should beable to tell from the first 3 numbers, from what I've been told. Hope this helps some.

jthumper35, you R&P should be 3.08, a friend of mine has a '87 yj and that is his ratio.

With the 258 engine there were three choices for gears .. my Jeep came with 3.73 gears .. I know that 3.54 gears were an option .. and the standard gear was 3.07. The difference was in the package from the factory ..

I dont know what package came on my jeep but i know it wasnt the standard package. Mine came with hard top, full steel doors, ac, and tilt wheel, automatic 4x4(very rare).

Just my .02 cents

Does it say Laredo on the decals on the sides???

If it does, you would have the 3.54 or the 3.73 gears. Do you have the factory towing package???

If it does, then you would most likely have the 3.73 gears.

My 1988 Laredo came with factory towing so it had the best gears available from the factory .. the 3.73 behind the 6-popper.

Having a Laredo doesn't necessarily mean you get 3.54 or 3.73. My 89 came with 3.07s.

Mudpig ..

Thanks for that piece of information .. my understanding from other Canadian Jeepers was that the Laredo had the better gears as part of the factory package. Maybe in the states its a different story .. <shrugging shoulders>

Sorry guys for not posting a reply and leaving yall in the dark. I do have a towing package on my jeep. It's not a Laradeo but still not sure what gears are on it. Could i take my vin number to my nearest Jeep dealer and check it out? I also have a sticker under my hood that has my specifications but im not sure if it says what gears. Ill look and see if that sticker shows it.

i appreciate all the help guys

jthumper have you checked the diff tags yet? That it the easiest way to tell unless the previous owner changed them.
