Thanks for the write up! My dad convinced me to do it and with your writeup it was easy.

I think my problem is in the box itself. It's just getting worn out. I'll end up replacing the steering shaft in fear of the mini ujoints going out and the box because it's got something to do with it. There's a dead spot in the steering and I just need to find it. This thread helped with tightening up the steering and making it more responsive but did not eliminate the dead spot. My tie rod ends are good so it's either the box or the pump or both. Tough to tell when nothing is leaking.

I'll just replace everything with upgraded parts and go from there!

What's it mean when your tierod rotates when you turn the stearing? It kinda spins on the knuckle?

I'm going to replace the gear box.

The adjustment didn't work at all, so I'm gonna replace the box. I'm a noob to steering. Is there anything I need to know?

Also if the problem could be elsewhere, where could I find it?

The slack is 10-2.

Do you have a pick and pull type junkyard near you? You can get one off an XJ there.
Also, are you sure that the box is your problem?

I didn't know an XJ would fit, I'll check around at the junkyard. I'm not 100% certain, but since the adjustment didn't work at all (initially it did help a little, but it didn't last long) my best guess is the gear box.

Isn't that for power steering? I have manual steering.

That does seem like a nice upgrade, but I'm very limited on time, and I just want to get my Jeep back on the road as quickly and painlessly as possible.
