starter running with no key in jeep

i just replaced my starter last night and everything was working fine i drove it last night and this morning.i went to the auto parts store with the jeep and it was fine but when i drove the mile home and shut it off the starter motor was running. it was not engaged but the motor was spinning. has this happened to any one im not sure what it could be maybe a bad starter or a short some where.

Probably a short somewhere. But I think that usually a short will engage the solenoid. I know that if you intentionally put a screwdriver across the 2 starter terminals it will engage the solenoid and jump the starter. So I would guess that it's something in the starter itself. If it's new I'd take it back to the store and tell them you want to exchange it because it's bad.

I had that happen on a new starter once. I had stopped at home and shut the truck off and the starter motor was spinning. I called the auto parts store and they casually said "just tap the solenoid with a hammer. It'll free up soon" like it happened all the time.

Fact is it did free up, only did that a couple of times.

That was one that had the solenoid on the starter. My heep has the solenoid on the firewall.
