starter help!

i was told to look and see if my 95 yjs starter needed a shim or not. it had been making a strange noise when i first fired it up for awhile. went to start it this morning and got nothing but horrible grinding noises. what should i do? just buy a new starter? please any suggestions asap. thansk

Grinding noise=bad starter or damaged flywheel. Pull it and inspect the teeth, replace the starter. Shim if necessary.

Inspect your flywheel when you take the starter out. Yes, replace it.

To add to Que's statement...

To make it easier to inspect the flywheel. Leave the starter on but remove the dust cover so you can see the flywheel that the starter turns... Then remove the center wire on the distributer comming from the coil (so the engine will not start, but will still turn over). Then you can have someone crank the motor while you are underneith the jeep, you can watch the flywheel turn while your friend is cranking the motor. Checked for chipped, missing, or damaged teeth.
