sputtering/stalling
Hi, I have a '91 4 cylinder 2.5L wrangler. But for the past month or so, it's been sputtering and hesitating when coming out of first and through the rest of the gears sometimes. I'll be driving just doing the speed limit or something and it will almost seem like it just shut off, but the engine is still running because i can still hear it, but i just don't get any power when i press on the gas pedal. and then it will all of a sudden get the power back and be fine. and sometimes it will backfire, and dumping the clutch helps to get it working again sometimes. if you need to know anything more about my jeep in order to try and figure out the problem don't hesitate to ask me what you need. any advice will help.
thank you, Jeff Silva

change your fuel filter and see if that helps it any.... if its starving for gas it will back fire on an occasion.

clogged catalitic convertor????, cause you to lose power but not necessarily stall the truck...how many miles? the fuel filter idea is cheaper to start with

It could possibly be the fuel filter. although I did check the fuel rail and it was letting the gas out, but that still might now show that there is a slight clog in there that could be letting most of the gas through. and it's not a clogged catalytic converter, i know that for sure considering my exhaust has been cut off from before the cat. and the engine only has about 140k on it.

Check for any stored codes (ignition key on-off, on-off, on) Could be a number of things, - TPS, CPS, etc.
Cheap little things to try would be cleaning the tps, and as stated above, change the fuel filter.

I am having a similar problem with my 91YJ 2.5L 5Spd. Start off from a stop light and get to about 2200 rpm and then it will not increase after that. I pulled to the side of the road, turned it off and checked the codes and nothing. Started it back up and it ran fine.

I found my problem, the rubber fuel line inside the tank had DESOLVED. The only thing left was the nylon mesh and the inner liner. I replaced it with a line designed to be used in the tank.
