spinny thing !

Im fabbing up a cold air system for my 88 4.2 carb yj and the air filter kit I'm using came with a fan thing as part of kit ! Now my dilemma is Iv one mechanic saying to use it cause it makes air/gas fumes mix better and another say it may cause a vacuum and could cause a fire / explosion ! anybody have experiance with these ?

I'd be willing to bet that it will cause nether of those things to happen.

Your Jeep already uses cold air. It has a duct which draws air near the drivers side headlight.

Those air "tornado" devices are a gimmic. I think they were co-invented with the pet rock.
They work about as well as the "fuel magnet"
If it doesn't break and get lodged in your motor, it will at least slow down the flow of air which will reduce power.

There are intake pre-cleaners that spin. They separate large dust particles and fling then out before collecting on the filter.
Those are used mainly on heavy equipment.

If you really want more power out of your 4.2 let's talk about that.
The power of the 4.2 can be improved.

Be careful. Many of those air intakes allow dirt in.

Iv removed all the computer stuff and she doesn't have the stock air cleaner on it ! Was a chrome one when I got her in 2012 ! I'm installing a snorkel with a pre filter and a carbon inline filter ! She already has a HEI dist and a non stepper carb ! And no I'm not taking her in deep water ! Just like the look of a snorkel and want the cooler air from what is being sucked off motor !

That sounds good. The carb mounted air cleaners are crap. We have one on one of our Jeeps and it needs to go.
Post some pics.

So I built a snorkel from parts from lowes and a nice scoop off ebay so I can tell you a few points I learned, it is the second one I did. I built a passenger side unit (See Pics) which mated well with my factory airbox. The nice thing is the unit is mostly out of the driver's view and it interferes with nothing, not even my A/C. The downside is it is very vulnerable to damage. I still went this way on both my builds. The hard core rock crawling community drops the duct down through the cowl and out through the firewall. Most members use the hummer style cap on these and they don't seem to present much of an obstruction. I believe they present a significant potential to leak and they rely on flex style dryer hose. I will not argue that they are way less vulnerable but I greatly struggle with the 4" holes in the cowl and firewall. I will post a link on a very well built one but here are pics of my build. Best of luck.

This guy shared a link above on an older how to but here is his and he has done an outstanding job in a very short time. This link is worth reading end to end, It's his third build and he rarely cuts any corners and he knows what works. It appears to be a very capable rig. Well thought out.

Here's the intake ! I do like the hummer style and the home made system looks good to ! I have the intake hose behind the headlight vent now ! So back to my earlier question should the fan thing stay or go ?
