Sound System & Top Suggestions Anyone?

I just bought a 1989 YJ 4 banger w/ 120k miles for bout 2700, good shape and all. I am only 16 and i get about 100 bucks a week from work so I could prob spend at least 300. im currently looking to invest into a sound system right now for the summer cruisin, and than a soft top for winter. The jeep came with an overhead soundbar w/ dual 4 in. jensen speakers. I looked the soundbar up on some accessory sites and they say it is about 150 bucks. Is there a way I can get good sound with leaving that soundbar in and just adding more speakers somewhere else? Can I replace the factory speakers in the dash, and if so what do you recommend? I have read about subs and the most popular spot is behind the back seat i've noticed, but I currently have a lockbox taking up all the room behind the rear seat so is there anywhere else I could put subs? Do I need an AMP? What about a new head unit, it has a Sony AM/FM Cassette deck in right now, i'd like CD though. ONE FINAL QUESTION, what kind of soft top would you prefer for the winter, is BESTTOP a good brand?
ALL SUGGESTIONS WANTED/NEEDED! SORRY IM A BEGINNER, STILL LEARNING...

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO WANT TO HELP THIS LOST SOUL!

I would keep the soundbar. and maybe upgrade those jenson speakers. you can also get replacement speakers to upgrade your dash speakers. As for an amp you could get by without one until you can afford to get a good one, as long as you don't put in a sub either. I have a sony deck, kenwood speakers in dash and soundbar.700 watt soundstream amp pushing one 12" JL sub. This sounds better than any jeep system I've heard. If you do add a sub behind the rear seat is the ideal place. however you could put bass tubes over the rear wheel wells. As for the top besttop is an excellent choice. Good luck!

Thought about upgrading my sound system also. I don't like the idea of any thing that is too easy to remove and steal. A box behind the rear seat sounds like it is asking for trouble to me but I could be wrong. Also, I an amp for me would have to be some where that if it rains and my top isn't on it won't fry. I plan on rhino lining or linex the interior since I get it rained on every so often, but electronics could be an issue.

As for suggestions: You could get some Thorn 5x7 roll bar mounts. About $90 for the mounts, then you can buy 2 5x7s, I am told they are great sound thought about doing this myself.

Hey -- i have 2 kenwood 10's in a standard box from best buy behind the back seat-- wedges in so tight so one is getting it out with the tailgate locked, i have a 600W amp under the rear seat with a pioneer 6 disc changer, i also have the speaker wedges that go beween the rear wheel well and the roll bar with kenwood 6x9's powered by a 200 watt MTX amp mounted under the center console, this is all powered by a pioneer cd head unit with pioneer 2 way dash speakers, i will be adding the besttop super soundbar this summer (the swivel one, with sony X-PLod speakers) mine sounds great top up or down with the soft top and just plain awesome with the hard top on, my rents yell that they can hear me coming for five minutes at night -- i live in BFE so i figure at a mile a minute , i had the 6x9s on the roll bar and they hung behind my head -- did not like this setup because 1. if you are in an accident you will have a permanent speaker in the back of your head. 2. restricts access to the back seat and 3. an unsuspecting dumb A$$ that isnt wearing his seatbelt in the back will conk his head on one. Best top is the best soft top that i have found so far good choice, if you invest in a system invest in an alarm mine actually scared the person that broke into my jeep off right in my driveway... if you hide stuff it generally wont get wet mine has been caught in downpours and was fine BUT the speakers behind the seat will be what you want to watch, i usually run with a tonneu cover keeps the "honest" theives out and keeps your stuff dry for those "oops i forgot my top days" as long as your going 25 or over you dont get hardly wet at all i hope i have answered some of your questions.

First question, you want to buy a soft top for the winter?! Do you mean hard top? I mean that kinda sounds *** backwards to me.

Next, my cousin bought a Jeep from his sister's bf because the guy wanted a car with more security for a system (he bought a honda civic) I know alot of people do put some kick *** systems in their Jeeps, but usually they have full steel doors and hardtops too fo added security. With a soft top, you can just unzip the windows and get right in. In fact, I think before 90' Jeep didnt bother to put locks on half doors.
Point being, keep in mind, the better the system, the more likely it is to be ripped off. Right now, I have a AM/FM $20 cassstte player in right now with a portable CD player, and the stock 4x6's. I plan to upgrade the 4x6's and put in a soundbar and a CD reciever. No room for subs cuz I need all the cargo space I can get. (I'm a drummer)
And Last, as for your soundbar, put it on ebay, and take the money and buy a soundbar that hold's 6x9's. There is a company, Edge automotive, that constantly has them for $100 new on ebay. Then buy a nice set of 6x9's.

PS. If you did mean u are looking for a soft top. Get a sailcloth by bestop, they are the quietest tops on the market. Keep out wind and road noise better, better acoustics inside, they run about $500.

Does that box with the subs fit in there with the seat down in normal position...
Did you buy it, make it?
Dimension?

I am looking at getting a couple subs but want to make sure it will work with the back seat in there too.
Thanks
Allan

Yes, The Sub Box fits in behind the seat with the seat in the normal position, and it can be folded and tumbled without even touching the box. My first box, I made...but that got stolen. So for this box that i have now, i just had it made and had insurance cover it. The dimensions of the box really depends on the subs that you buy. Thy require different airspaces and such. But my box goes from wheel-well to wheel-well leaving room still for the seatbelt mounts. and it has about 2 inches between it and the tailgate. (which allows room for my hitch and any other stuff.

Allan

I've got a box I bought from C.C. that fits 2 10" subs face down that was specifically designed for the Wrangler. The box is one solid unit that has a divider which seperates each SW. It costs about 130$ + the tax. It's easy to bolt down but I haven't done it yet. It fits with the back seat still in and the seat is able to tumble. I have two cheap baja 10" in it. Sound is nice but needs bigger amp. If you're interested in one I'll sale you this one with the speakers for 100$ you pay shipping. It's 3 months old. I'm just tired of worring about the thing getting stolen plus I've kinda out grown the loud music and all, and I'm only 29 lol. I bought it cause I had to crank my stereo up all the way while driving down the road with the top up. People look at me funny when they pull up cause they can hear it pretty loud, but I can't in the wind tunnel. I'm thinking about just going with the sailcloth top and pulling the subs. If anybody wants it let me know.

I don't know how well or if you have ever built enclosures before? But you can make a system in a jeep as secure as that in most vehicles. First you can build the enclosure and not put the face on the box while building it. Set the enclosure in place and bolt it to the floor(watch out for the tank). Then mount your sub or subs on the inside of the front face of the box. then you cann silicon and screw the face on and not worry about the box being removed or someone unscrewing your speakers without taking alot of time. For the amp you can do basically the same thing under the seat. You can actually by a security box that fits under the rear seat that take the place of your existing hardware. you could then drill a hole for the speaker wire and then it would also be protected from the rain.

If you are really interested i can get you a pic of my box as well that i got for 10's at Best buy 70 bux, it gives about 3 inches either side of it TOUCHES the back of the seat -- i have 2 round rings from the seal -- the speaker itself doesnt touch but the seal type thing the same slips my mind does..., but i plan on getting the protector grates just in case, it only gives about an inch if that bewteen the gate and the box, it is damn near impossible to remove with the gate shut/locked, one disadvantage -- they only come in black, i am going to recover mine, if i do it will just look like i have one of those shelves, its that tight.

All I have near me is a Circut City and by the looks of the price on your box they are way over priced. I agree that they are almost impossible to remove when not bolted down with the tail gate shut until i reach to the side of the seat and folded the seat up.
