Are you sure it's the transfer case?

This is where I would start too , but drain fluids and look for metal. when my D35 turned itself into a full posi I drained the fluid and it looked like metallic paint there was so much metal shavings in there

and if it is your tranny going out do some searching because most people do not go back with that POS peugot tranny. they normally upgrade to a ax-15 or nv-3550 which are better tranny's and are alot more reliable.

Yeah 87 was a split year for the 207 or 231 t-case. The 207 isn't a bad case, just a one off deal. Chance's are in favor of it being the BA tranny. It's not if they will break, but when and they are expensive and not worth rebuilding. It will be a great time to install the AX-15. When I purchased my 87 with a 120,000 miles on it, someone had allready swapped in the AX-15. With the BA, it'a just a matter of time. Just driving down the road the t-case don't usaully start makeing noise, tranny's do.

Did you check the t-case and see if it was full of fluid?
