Smoking and not sure where

I really need someone's help here.

I have a 91 YJ 4.0 and I am getting a weird smoke in coming from through the interior. It only does it when the windows are down and it can be suctioned out I from around the trans on the floorboard.

I put a new rear main seal in, changed the oilpan and gasket and even the valve cover gasket.

I have a K&N filter on it and a breather off of the valve cover which seems to be leaking from where it connects. I was told that I need to run a air line to the filter tube that the K&N cone filter is attached to. I was told it needs to breath right and if it doesn't it will leak.

I looked under the Jeep and see nothing leaking anywhere.. Have no drops anywhere and dont see anything not normal.

When you look under the hood the oil seems to be on top of the valve cover around the breather and even the PCV valve on the rear. It has a new PCV valve also.

My main question is this breathing of the engine the cause? If not what other suggestions does anyone have. Thanks

HELP

Does it smell kinda sweet and muggy? It may be a leaky heater coil, it would smell like antifreeze. does it intensify w/ your heater on rather than off? Other than that im not sure what it could be...possibly one of those lines (which for the life of me i cant figure out what they are for) that run off of your catilytic (sp?) converter to some unknown place.....good luck.

It doesn't really have an odor that I can smell. If anything I would say its like oil. It does it all the time..Heater on or off. It almost looks like its coming out of the tranny or on the floor where that black tranny cover or whatever that is below the shifter.

If it were leaking down the back of the valve cover it could hit the exhaust manifold of pipe and cause it to smoke. I just really want it to stop so want to hear all suggestions as what to look for. Thanks.

i would remove the floor cover over the tranny and take a ride w/ it out. pretty easy to take out...it will be a cold noisy ride but you might be able to see where its coming from. do you have any problems shifting or anything? it could even be a locking up throwout bearing burning the fingers and grease off your pressure plate....assuming you have a manual..? but that would be my next step, get the engine warm on a ride, then when the smoke starts pull over and see if you can pinpoint it.

Anyone? Could this be true about the breather on the valve cover or that its not breathing properly and that is causing the leak?

well, i've got a K&N on the breather port that you're talking about and haven't had any problems with it. the reason a tube is run from the air filter tube to this port is to provide filtered fresh air, but you're already doing that with the separate filter. The rear port is the CCV valve. this needs to have a vacuum tube connecting it to manifold vacuum in order for the crankcase vapors to be drawn out. Which port were you told to run an air line to? the front or the back? I highly doubt that this is the source of your problems unless you're missing a tube running back to the CCV oriface. did you have this problem before or after you did the valve cover gasket? maybe you missed a tube when you put it back together. what type of gasket did you use when you changed the valve cover gasket? check for an oil leak at the very back of the engine witha mechanics mirror. it's easy to not get the VC gasket to seal properly back there. also, check your header pipe for an exhaust leak near the front. usually it's loud, but not always. HTH
