Sierra Rack / Trail Rack

I'd been looking at a Sierra Rack / Trail Rack lately. You know, the kind with the basket that sits above the spare tire.
I was thinking of getting one of these, but when I went to the 4x4 store in Reno yesterday, the guy said don't. He said with in 1-2 years it would become lose and cause damage to the body.
Anyone have one of these, that they've been using awhile?
Is it worthwile, or does it become a problem down the road?
