Shudder IS Driving me CRAZY

Just to catch up from my last post about my shudder in 1st & reverse, sporadically. I dropped the 1991 Jeep YJ, 5 spd. at Clutch Mart (200 miles away rt) They have installed 3 clutch assemblyís, all I believe not needed. They said they would diagnose my problem before replacing it again. They had it for 2 weeks and said they couldnít find the problem and donít believe the clutch is the problem. They offered to take it to a differential shop, I said OK. They said it wasnít the differential. After that didnít pan out, they said they new of a strictly a drive shaft repair shop. They said the rear drive shaft was a little loose. I was under the Jeep before I took it up there and didnít seem it was loose to me. They did say it looks like someone did replace the ďUĒ joints not to long ago, which I did with Auto Zone joints. They said there ďUĒ are junk and not quite the right size or quality like Spicer or Hardy? There 1st quote was $130.00, but after they took it all apart the quote is now $230.00. I did say, fix it. Iím desperate to find this problem. They havenít called me back to pickup the Jeep, it should be any day. Iíll let you know if this fix my problem, or for me to check into an insane asylum. This Jeep is driving me crazy . ALL replies and information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Check both of the motor mounts & the tranny mount.

+1 on motor and trans mounts. My YJ has had a shudder develop a couple of times, and 3 times I have cured it by replacing motor mounts. Trans mounts got changed too, but I think it was really the motor mounts. They have ridiculous slop in the OEM motor mounts. This last time I went with Brown Dog mounts, and I don't think they are ever going to loosen up.

Also make sure the anti-torque bracket and bushings are replaced on the trans mounts. Sometimes guys leave that thing out completely, because they don't understand what it does.

Even a new clutch can shudder if it is getting oil leaked on it. But I think your shop has eliminated that possibility.

Motor/trans mounts are a common culprit in a lot of shudder/vibe/clunking issues. Check that you still have the trans mount torque arm in place and functional(not tight)

With all this clutch work, was your flywheel ever replaced? Or at least reground(not machined)?

Shudder IS Driving me CRAZY

Guys, The problem with that diagnose of the mounts, is it's only shudders once in a while, (ONLY WHEN RELEASING THE CLUTCH STARTING OUT IN 1ST OR REVERSE GEAR) once the clutch is engaged it's find. No mater how hard you try and make shudder (when it's not shuddering) you can't make it shudder/happen. I would think if it was motor or trans mounts you could make the shudder happen at will???? I did put new motor mounts in from Auto Zone and did have a problem that the treads didn't match the nut I took off, so instead of driving all the way back to Auto Zone I chased the threads with a die. I also replace the VSS: Vehicel Speed Senser and the threads didn't work there either and had to chase those threads. I'm not enthused about there parts. I don't remember when, but I did change the trans mount??? And looking and feeling it, it looks OK?? I can put the Jeeps tires up against a stationary object to try and rock the motor/trans to see if mount are bad and nothing rocks?? And I've never got the shudder doing that??????

Drednot,
Every Time the clutch work was done the flywheel was ground. And every time the work was done I stayed at the shop and I went out to look under the Jeep myself to see if any oil was anywhere near the clutch assembly and it was dry. And ALL the clutch parts looked new. Didn't need to be replaced, but sense it was apart I had them put in ALL new parts, pinion bearing, clutch plate, clutch disk, t-bearing, etc plus I looked at the front of the transmission, dry as a bone. OH, I also put new transmission torque bushings. Still :

How many times was the original flywheel ground? Was it ground on a flywheel grinder or just cut like a machine shop would do?
Some places just deglaze it with a hand grinder

Have you had a NEW flywheel installed yet?

Shudder always only happens when you are taking off. That's why it is a shudder, and not just a drive line vibration.

Anyway, don't know what else to tell you.

This Jeep has only been on easy trails a couple of times, mostly on road, snow, rain. Taken care of like a new baby.

Another thought...how often do you drive it?
Do you park it on grass?

Your absolutely correct!!! That's exactly what I told the drive shaft people. But they insisted the drive shaft had problems??? When I sealed the front yoke on the drive shaft I took the yoke off the "U" joints for the repair. the joint seem new and tight, rotated very smoothly. They said the pockets were stretched and I don't remember what else, but when I get the bill I'll tell you more. It's now been to 3 professional Jeep shops , a strictly clutch and trans shop, a strictly differential shop, and now to a strictly driveshaft only shop. and nobody can find the problem????

Grass "transpires" and gives off moisture. When you park/store on grass, that moisture tends to cause rust. Thinking maybe that a little surface rust on the clutch surface that rubs off on first engagement or two?
