Should I avoid a carbed YJ?

In my search for the YJ, is there any really good reasons why I should avoid a carbed 4.2 YJ? I dont like the idea of a carb, but should this deter me from buying one thats in good condition and mildly built?

I personaly have had 0 problems with mine....minus the even more poor gas mileage, my buddy also has a 89 that he has not problems with.

People say that there bad a angles, I havnt had a problem yet, I think if you not running it upside down you should be alright....if you are running it upside down, I want pictures.

mmm

Mine is on an 89, except for the idle fix(which is on this forum) I have had no problems, until this month. My carb had had enough and I could not get my jeep started. A rebuild cost me $16.95 for the kit, 19.99 for the cleaning dip(which worked great) and a sunny afternoon in the driveway with my brother. That s less then $40 for a 17 year old carb!! No complaints here.

I wouldn't aviod one at all. You may or may not have troubles. I bought my '89 nine years ago with only 65k or so on it. The carb was crap for me from day one. I rebuilt it once, but still had troubles. I replaced it with factory rebuilt ones twice and still had problems. Finally, I spent the bucks and bought a Weber. It now runs great. In hindsight, the only thing that I would have done differently is put the Weber on in the beginning.

I have recarbed mine (MC2100). I love it. The carbed YJ might take a little bit more of your time but when I say, little ,I mean Little. I see no reason to avoid them. Just be aware of what you're buying. Make sure whatever you buy is running up to your standards carbed or FI

I prefer my carbed 4.2 on my 88 over the FI 4.0. No computer crap to deal with.

HI All,
Five years ago I bought my '89 YJ for $1200. Physically and mechanically it was in nice shape but it did not run at all. The previous owner had totally trashed the stock emissions system trying to fix it. Me, being a closet tree-hugger, decided to ignore all the advice to eliminate the emisions system and replace the carb. Instead, I rebuilt and restored the system including the carb (Carter BBD). It was a big job considering that I did not know anything about such things. But armed with every service manual I could find (none of them were 100% right! including the official Jeep Service Manual), I got it done. I also replaced every vacuum line in the Jeep. I ran it for 5 years with only a slight idle problem (the famous BBD dripping jet problem).

Last week it ran fine with the BBD. This week it is Howell fuel injected.

I don't know how the FI will work. The reports are good. I do know the carb had problems at extreme angles with the engine either flooding or starving. Yes, I did adjust the floats; several times, in fact. On the street, fine. Under normal wheeling conditions, fine. Under extreme conditions it was a no go. My winch got a lot of overtime pay!! Sometimes it was flat-out dangerous to get stuck at these extreme angles with no engine. Remember, no engine means no power brakes or power steering either. The radio still worked though.

So, I can't tell you to install an FI because I don't have any experience yet. I expect it to solve those carb problems. Time will tell. But I can say that the Carter BBD had problems you don't need if you expect to go eveywhere with your cute little YJ.

I recarbed mine with a mc2150 1.08
works great now very please and fuel economy has gone up. over the carter.
exhuast smells are down and more pleasent
just because it is carbed is nothing to be affraid of.

A carbed engine has more adjustability than a FI engine and also trail fixing is easier by mcguivering it.

I bought the 2100 kit from the ebay guy and it runs awesome. even in neg. degree weather. The only prob. ive had was last time I was home i made her swim a little and got water & mud in the carb, she started sputtering like crazy. the float was sticking because of dirt. so I snuffed it out with a rag until the engine died and it was good to go. the rag makes the float open up wide and the fuel flow cleans it out.
